La MaMa Umbria International
La MaMa Umbria International is an autonomous non-profit cultural association located in Spoleto, Italy, established in 1990 by Ellen Stewart, a pioneer in avant-garde theatre and the founder and Artistic Director of the world-renowned La MaMa Theatre in New York. La MaMa Umbria International is an integral part of an extensive international network of comparable organizations, festivals, and venues located in Europe, the United States, Asia, and other regions of the world. It serves as an international artist residency, a center for advanced study, research, and production of innovative and emerging performing arts. La MaMa Umbria offers culturally diverse artists the opportunity to live together while working on productions, studying, participating in workshops, or developing their artistic research. In the twenty-five years of its existence, it has produced an extensive range of dance, theatre, and multimedia productions, as well as workshops, art exhibitions, and conferences, involving artists from Europe and beyond.
For the past fourteen years, La MaMa Umbria has been successfully operating an international summer program of master classes on various aspects of theatre, including the International Symposium for Directors, Playwright Retreat, and Master Classes for actors, with the involvement of distinguished international teachers. Participants from various parts of Europe and beyond have the chance to interact and work with inspiring masters. In recent years, with the collaboration of CultureHub and the Seoul Institute of the Arts, a significant emphasis has been placed on exploring telepresence technology as a tool for educational programs and artistic exchanges. Several exchanges, workshops, and artistic projects have been produced using this medium.
La MaMa Umbria has always maintained a global outlook, with a particular focus on contemporary languages and the involvement of young people. The organization conducts a thriving international summer program of master classes on various aspects of theatre, such as the International Symposium for Directors, Playwright Retreat, and Master Classes for actors, with the participation of renowned international teachers.
