Berwick-upon-Tweed is a place for artists to live and work and for many years supported professional artists through its International Gymnasium Residency programme managed by English Heritage and supported by Arts Council England. Berwick Visual Arts is committed to continuing this initiative by providing two residency opportunities for visual artists every year supported by Arts Council England. Artists are invited to live and work in Berwick-upon-Tweed for a 6 month period and respond to what Berwick offers in terms of its unique history, coastal and border location, unusual spaces, archives and collections, social contexts and to work with its people. The residency opportunity requires the applicant artist to have been out of college (BA graduate) for a minimum of 3 years and to be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to their artistic practice and evidence a body of work and strong track record, through new work, projects, exhibitions, publishing, and/or commissions. One of the residency opportunities is aimed at film and moving image artists in partnership with Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival. This residency provides the artist the opportunity to produce a new piece of work during the 6 month period to be premiered at the Film Festival in September of each year. The second residency opportunity is currently in partnership with the Centre for Rural Economy at Newcastle University and provides the opportunity for an artist working in any art-form to explore and respond to current rural issues.
The work will be premiered at Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival. The selected artist will also be expected to provide up to four talks and presentations about their work over the course of the residency.
