Ways to listen to a river

Argentinian artist Nahuel Cano, in residence at Doornburgh, follows the poetic trail that rivers have created in Argentina and in the Netherlands

What do you hear when you listen to a river? What history and stories lie hidden within it? Argentinian artist Nahuel Cano, in residence since July at Buitenplaats Doornburgh, explored the Vecht (Utrecht) and the Limay and Salado (Argentina). He translated the various themes of these rivers, such as human intervention in nature, capitalism, ecology, colonialism, into Ways to listen to a river, a multimedia performance developed together with filmmaker Juan Fernández Gebauer and Ensemble Modelo62.

The trailer is composed with footage recorded during Nahuels' research of the river Vecht. During 6 months he spoke with residents and many other people who have an interest at the river, peeling away layers of history, culture, conflicts and stories.

The performance was presented as part of Gaudeamus Festival at Buitenplaats Doornburgh. The residency was realised in collaboration with Residences Utrecht and the Province of Utrecht.
