Sitka's Residency provides artists, writers, musicians, architects and natural science scholars the opportunity to work while engaging with the environment

Sitka's Residency Program, October through May, provides artists, writers, musicians, architects and natural science scholars the opportunity to conduct their work while deeply engaging with the environment of Cascade Head, on Oregon's central coast. Up to six residents at a time (up to 28 per year), from different disciplines and stages in their careers, live and work on campus for up to 3 and a half months, free of charge. All residents are encouraged to perform community outreach during their stay, offering free exhibits and lectures on campus, presentations to area schools or community groups, and/or conducting scholarly research for local educational institutions.

Studio Information

Sitka's studios are comfortable and flexible. They can provided basic items like easels, task lights, tables and chairs. One studio contains a printing press, and there is a small ceramics studio on campus. Sitka does not provide art or laboratory supplies used for art making or scientific investigation. Please talk with the organisers about your specific needs.

Accommodation Information

Each resident receives private living space and, if needed, private studio space. Studios and residences are assigned by the Sitka Center depending on individual needs and collective needs. Residences include private living, sleeping, bathroom and kitchen areas. Each kitchen is equipped for basic cooking. Laundry facilities are available at a central location on campus. Most residents are given a private studio. There is Wi-Fi available in all studios and residences. Residents are responsible for providing their own food, art supplies, and transportation while in residence.

Location

On the central Oregon coast in the Cascade National Scenic Research Area and near the Salmon River Estuary and Pacific Ocean. The campus is nestled in a Sitka spruce tree grove. There is a natural sense of tranquility and peace. Residents are encouraged to experience the area by hiking, walking, following elk trails, canoeing, and kayaking.

An opportunity to live on an oceanic research vessel for 14 days among a team of research scientists from OSU, UofO and PSU
Free room and board while on the ship with an additional (optional) 2 week stay at Sitka's main campus to creatively respond to the experience
$1500 artist stipend including travel and material.
An opportunity to share or display the art created during this residency in a variety of channels including the HMSC Visitor Center, the Sitka Art Invitational and at a show at the Giustina Gallery on the University of Oregon Campus in Corvallis

Paid by artist
$30 application fee. Sitka offers application fee assistance to those for whom this is a barrier.
Each resident is responsible for all of their own travel and living expenses, including transportation food, toiletries and any supplies used in their work.
