EMMA Open Call: Designers in Residence 2023

Call for application for young design artists from the fields of jewellery, fashion, accessory, industrial and graphic design. Deadline: 15 November, 2022.

„Designers in Residence“ is an international scholarship program of the City of Pforzheim granted to young design artists from the fields of jewellery, fashion, accessory, industrial and graphic and other areas of design. Three designers are invited to work on their projects from April 1 to June 30, 2023, at EMMA Creative Center, the central platform for creative people in Pforzheim, Germany. The town of Pforzheim is characterized by an active creative scene which is focused on the area of design. The faculty of design at the Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences has established Pforzheim as a university town with an international reputation.

The scholarship is fully funded and includes the use of fully equipped workshop workplaces in the EMMA Creative Center and free accommodation for the period from April 1 to June 30, 2023. In addition, each scholarship holder will receive monthly support of 1,000 euros together with travel costs. A special allowance will be made available for material costs. The results of the scholarship will be presented in an exhibition at the EMMA Creative Center.

The jury consists of:

  • Louise Bennetts, fashion designer, researcher, lecturer MA Fashion Royal College of Art, London
  • Frederike Kintscher, Industrial designer, Verband Deutscher Industrie Designer e.V., Berlin
  • Karen Pontoppidan, jewellery artist, President of the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich

The scholarship program is directed towards young international designers in the areas of
jewellery, fashion, accessories, industrial and communication design, and other design disciplines. Applicants must have completed studies at a university of applied sciences or university, must either not be older than 35 years or must have completed their studies not longer than two years ago. To apply, a proposal for a project that can be implemented during the scholarship must be submitted. Interdisciplinary project proposals are welcome. Language skills in German or English are required. Those accepting the scholarship are required to be in residence. The scholarship holder may only be absent for a maximum of 10 days. The period of residence in Pforzheim is from April 1 to June 30, 2023.

Applicants have to submit the following documents during the online application:

  • Curriculum vitae including details of previous grants, awards, prizes
  • proof of final degree
  • Work samples: products/models, photographs or other pictures of the design work (folder, catalogue)

There are no registration fees. Confirmation of a scholarship will be made in mid-December 2022.
