Call to apply for Macdowell residency
MacDowell is an artist residency program in Peterborough, New Hampshire, open to artists from around the world. Since its founding in 1907, MacDowell has imbued its spaces with a deep and abiding respect for artists and their creative work. This fundamental kindness is sustained by the curiosity, generosity, and goodwill circulating within the resident community. MacDowell encourages applications from artists representing the widest possible range of perspectives and demographics.
MacDowell strives to offer ideal working conditions for artists within a joyful and mutually supportive environment. Consistent with that mission, all Fellows are obliged to adopt the community agreement as a condition of accepting a Fellowship. Doing so will help ensure that all Fellows may participate in the enriching exchange that has given rise to countless friendships and collaborations.
As MacDowell is located in a rural environment, artists-in-residence need to be comfortable with a degree of solitude and disconnection from the outside world. A Fellowship consists of exclusive use of a studio, accommodations, and three prepared meals a day for two to eight weeks. Studios are comfortably furnished with the artists’ needs in mind. MacDowell does not charge a residency fee. Artists are responsible for materials and travel expenses: financial assistance is available to artists in residence based on demonstrated financial need.

There are opportunities for artists-in-residence to share work with other artists, or to present their work through organized outreach events. All presentation and/or outreach events are optional.
Artists-in-residence have exclusive use of the studio assigned to them during their Fellowship. Assignments are based on the needs that the artist expressed on their application. Studios are unique in style and function and rustically furnished. Artists are also provided with 24-hour access to our state-of-the-art library, which is shared by all artists-in-residence.
A MacDowell Fellowship includes a private studio, housing, and three meals per day.
Digital media, exhibition, installation, film and digital editing, heavy metals, blacksmithing, music studio (non-recording), painting, photography (non-digital), printmaking and sculpture facilities.
Spread across 450 acres of woodlands and fields are 32 MacDowell artist studios. Each studio is private and set apart from one another.

There are no residency fees. MacDowell offers need based financial assistance to cover a percentage of costs related to direct travel to MacDowell as well as a one-time stipend to cover expenses that artists expect to incur while in residence, including rent, lost income, and childcare, for those that qualify. Qualification forms are available to those artists accepted through MacDowell's application process.
Paid by artist:
Application fee of $30. Supplies related to working materials necessary for project; supplies related to personal needs.
Application guidelines:
Artists eligible to apply to MacDowell are those that are creating an original work of art; are at least 21 years of age; are not currently a student enrolled in a degree program; able to submit a complete application. Applications are online and can be found through MacDowell's website. A complete application is one in which the applicant can provide a concise description of a proposed project, work samples within the same discipline and genre as their proposed project, and five artistic achievements. All of these items are submitted through an online application which will open August 15, 2026. The submission deadline is September 10, 2026.
