Art Explora x Cité internationale des arts 2023

The residency focuses on the themes of scientific and technological exploration. Deadline: November 4, 2022

The Art Explora Foundation engages with public and private stakeholders to support creation and its circulation in society at large. It consists in reaffirming the central role of artists in addressing the major contemporary issues and mutations.

Art Explora has established a partnership with the Cité internationale des arts to co-construct a biannual residency programme for international artists and researchers in Montmartre, just a stone’s throw from the Sacré-Cœur. This programme offers the possibility for artists and researchers to carry out research and creation work in the heart of Paris, in connection with the French artistic and professional scene.

Some 20 residents are selected every year to participate in two programs: a 6-month solo residency programme for artists and a 3-month duo programme designed for a collaboration between a researcher and an artist.

The Art Explora - Cité internationale des arts residencies are open to artists and researchers of all nationalities, with no age limit, who can justify a minimum of five years of professional activity. The eligible artistic disciplines are visual arts, performing arts, digital art and the areas of research are the humanities, social sciences, sciences, technological innovation and sustainable development, art criticism and exhibition curating. Artists apply with a project that addresses major contemporary questions, including the relation between art and science, new technologies, social and environmental issues.

The Art Explora x Cité internationale des arts residency programme gives artists and researchers from around the world the opportunity to develop research and creative work in the heart of Paris, in connection with the French artistic and professional scene. It encourages creation in all its forms while facilitating its dissemination to the greatest number of people. The work of the residents focuses on the themes of scientific and technological exploration and addresses the major social and environmental issues of our time.

Art Explora has 8 residential studios in the Cité internationale des arts of Montmartre and welcomes about twenty artists in residency each year. The residency consists of two programmes.

SOLO Programme is for artists only. Each resident will benefit from:

  • A 6-month residency at the Cité internationale des arts in Montmartre
  • A studio apartment of about 50m2 (only one double bed), fully equipped and furnished
  • A grant of 1,000 euros per month
  • A production grant of up to 3,000 euros, delivered upon justification and according to the specificity of the project
  • A round trip to the residence

The DUO Programme is for a collaboration between an artist and a researcher or scientist based in France, or an artist collective. Each resident will benefit from:

  • A 3-month residency at the Cité internationale des arts in Montmartre
  • A studio apartment of about 50m2 (only one double bed), fully equipped and furnished
  • A grant of 1,000 euros per month
  • A production grant of up to 3,000 euros, delivered upon justification and according to the specificity of the project
  • A round trip to the residence

For the DUO program, only one studio apartment (a bedroom with a double bed, a workspace, a kitchen and a bathroom) can be made available: exclusively for the artist in the context of a collaboration with a researcher based in France, or for one artist from a collective. The workspace may be shared with the researcher or other members of the collective. The living grant will be paid only to the resident housed at the Cité internationale des arts de Montmartre and a common production grant will be allocated to the project.

Registration is free. Interested artists or researchers must submit an online project in English or French (no other language accepted) that includes:

  • A description of the artistic project or research that will be developed during the residency (general description, steps of the project…): 3500 characters max. (not including spaces) that can be accompanied by visuals
