Yamaguchi Shoten, located in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, publishes academic books and English textbooks for high schools. The founder was a friend of Shiko Munakata, a woodblock printing artist who was especially active from the late 1950s to the 1970s. The founder provided Munakata with a place to stay and a base for his artistic activities when he came to Kyoto. This place was provided as an artist-in-residence 70 years ago. Tsutomu Mukaida, who participated in the Mingei Movement, renovated the building in the Mingei style (built in 1938, renovated in 1959).

Yamaguchi Shoten welcomes artists, designers, researchers, and writers who wish to stay in Kyoto and work. We particularly welcome those interested in “Mingei” (Arts and Crafts/folk art movement). They also welcome artists involved in handicrafts, as there are many people in the area who are interested in handicraft culture. Their basic policy is to offer medium- to long-term stays of 1-2 months.
