Description

The Environmental Artist-in-Residence Program at Wildacres welcomes artists, scientists and other professionals and creative practitioners engaging with ambitious ideas who are activity-focused on current global environmental issues. Candidates will be chosen for their intellectual and creative rigor as well as activism in their creative practice, with a deep emphasis on our climate crisis and its many permutations for society moving forward.
The intent of the Wildacres EAIR program is to support professional individuals and their creative practices from several disciplines, including all areas of art, social practice, writing, research, environmental restoration, natural science and other environmental and creative disciplines. Qualified applicants will include artists and scientists who focus on climate change, global warming, the extinction crisis, habitat loss, soil degradation, as well as remedies and human adaptations to these and other pressing climate crisis issues. We are interested in artists who understand the cycles of the natural elements they are investigating and how the dynamics of our warming planet play a role in those cycles. For instance, in the local Blue Ridge Mountains the demise of Hemlock forests through infestation by an introduced insect has unbalanced essential elements of local watersheds.

Outcome

We do not require projects to be completed during the residency period. Our aim is to facilitate a distraction and stress free environment for you to focus on your work.

Studio Information

The cabins used to host residents also serve as studio spaces. Each cabin is notably spacious. Depending on their requirements and the availability of space on the main campus, residents can access a ceramics studio equipped with potter’s wheels, a slab roller, extruder, drying booth, worktables, two gas kilns, and two electric kilns. Additionally, there are relief and etching printmaking presses, a fully equipped lapidary workshop, a 165-seat auditorium with a stage, two grand pianos on the premises, along with a keyboard available for use in the cabins. Other facilities include a flux-space open studio, an amphitheater, and a small library. For those requiring additional studio space beyond the immediate offerings, it is advised to specify such needs in the application. This will enable the organizers to make necessary arrangements to ensure access to the desired workspace during the residency. The main campus hosts various non-profit group symposiums and retreats throughout the operational season, and these spaces are open for use by all. Advance knowledge of specific spaces needed will facilitate coordination and accommodation to best suit the residents' requirements.

Accommodation Information
Participants in the program stay in one of three spacious, private, and self-catering cabins located just a quarter-mile beyond the main campus entrance. One of the cabins is completely ADA compliant and another can house two residents working on a project together.
Technical Information

They are located in a remote location. Because of this, there is limited access to cell service but we do provide WiFi and each cabin has a landline. Residents are responsible for their own transportation to and from the residency.
