12 months (from January to December) for international artis
Paid by host:

Wiels offers a working studio and its equipment (furniture, electricity, water, Internet etc), tutorials with confirmed artists, on site curatorial and technical staff, 1 public presentation during the residency, 1 study trip abroad and regular excursions.

Paid by artist:

The artist or his/her sponsoring organization is expected to pay the living and travel costs.

Application guidelines:

Applications for residencies in 2022 are currently open only to artists from/in Belgium (living and/or working in Belgium for at least 2 years).

Candidates may work with any medium. Students are not eligible. Applicants must be at least 21 yo and not be enrolled in any degree program.

The deadline is on the 31st of May every year

Centrum voor hedendaagse kunst

Wiels is an international laboratory for the creation and the diffusion of contemporary art. Focusing on visual arts, but granting a particular attention to the crossings and interactions with other disciplines, the centre wishes to present contemporary art in all its diversity and to offer a permanent dialogue with the developments and the most recent debates of the art world.

2022 Residencies Current Call

In partnership with Africalia, the current call for applications for the 2022 residencies is now open to artists from the following African countries only: Burkina Faso, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Uganda, Zimbabwe. Submission deadline is 1 September 2021.


Exhibition & performance: WIELS makes every effort to exhibit or perform the projects created by the residents during their stay.

Studio Information

Nine working studios are accessible 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Studios are furnished and have Internet access.

Accommodation Information

Accommodation is not provided, but it is possible to sleep in some of the studios.
