The Watermill Center provides local transportation, housing, and workspace as part of the Residency Program. If the artist initiates it, The Watermill Center will supply signed letters of support for outside funding and can offer advice for potential funders to underwrite or assist.

Paid by artist:

During the course of the residency, residents are responsible for living expenses such as food, and travel to and from Watermill, and also production expenses such as art materials and supplies, and equipment rentals. Watermill will provide a modest reimbursement to offset these expenses. Additional details will be provided upon acceptance to the program.

Application guidelines:

Applications for the 2024 Residency Program are now open. Applications will be accepted through February 13, 2023, 11:59 PM EST.

Applications are accepted through the online portal, SlideRoom. SlideRoom will lead you through the required questions, attachments, and media uploads. There is a $12 USD fee per application. Payment is accepted on the SlideRoom website.

They strongly advise submitting your application early. With many applicants waiting until the last minute to submit their applications, there can be technical difficulties on the day of the deadline, including payment processing.

Please note: they do not accept late applications. There will be no extension on the deadline. Applicants will be notified of the status of their application by mid-July. Acceptance and rejection notifications are sent at the same time.

Description

The Watermill Center is a laboratory of inspiration and performance, founded by theatre and visual artist Robert Wilson, which provides a unique environment for a global community of emerging and established artists and thinkers to gather and explore new ideas together.

Watermill’s Artist Residency Program began in 2006 when The Center officially opened as a year-round facility. Each year collectives and individual artists take up residence at The Center to live and develop works that critically investigate, challenge and extend the existing norms of artistic practice. Artists-in-Residence share their creative process with the community through open rehearsals, workshops and artist talks. Artists-In-Residence receive access to an extensive collection of resources central to the Watermill experience: 20,000 square feet of rehearsal/design spaces and outdoor stages; a theatre production archive; The Watermill Center Study Library; The Watermill Center Collection; and The Center’s eight-and-a-half acre landscaped grounds and sculpture gardens.

Outcome

Artists are expected to present their work to the community in some fashion, be it an open rehearsal, open studio, artist talk, lecture, etc. Artists are also asked to engage with their Education Programs for local children.

Accommodation Information

Completed in 2006, The Center combines performance and rehearsal sites with working and communal living spaces. Its flexible and multi-purpose interiors house formal and informal performance spaces, The Watermill Center Collection of art and artifacts, an extensive reference library, kitchen facilities, and a dormitory. The Center is situated on eight-and-a-half acres of wooded and landscaped grounds in a rural environment.
