Description

The Villa facilitates slow living and serenity, thus space and inspiration to let artistic processes unfold and concise contemplation take place. A space with fertile ground for discourses, about vita contemplativa and activa, a space for temporary communities, a space for interventions and revitalisation.

The residents of the Villa mainly live in autonomy and by themselves. The facilities are taken care of by the current group of residents and with the according solicitude. Mindfulness and awareness are constant co-beings and from time to time, the pears need to be harvested from the tree.

The residency is in constant transformation, a place in progress, a place of encounters and constant collaboration. Their interest does not lay in what you already have achieved, but in what you want to remain unsure of.

Outcome

At the end of the year (December), the two groups together with the members of the working collective of the residency as well as the curators of the exhibition space Krone/Couronne in Biel, will be able to work out an exhibition. The show is intended to take place as a group exhibition which brings work created during the residency in contact with the public. This is not to ask you to create work all together, but rather they are aiming to host individual as well as collective artistic standpoints relating to our annual topic “staying uncertain”.

Studio Information

The big workshop is equipped with some hand machines and tools as well as a small material pool. The windows facing the «Grange», create a link between the two rooms. The gate is opening the Room onto the «Grand Rue» allowing to work on large objects in the workshop. The room cannot be heated.

The pottery studio is located on the ground floor. A lot of daylight enters the room through the glass door to the «Rue des Fossés». There are potter’s wheels and some clay working tools as well as a kiln. There is a selection of clay and glazes that can be obtained from the collective.

The Grange is ideal for performative art, large installations or exhibitions. The three levels create special spaces that allow for new perspectives. The space is insulated but cannot be heated.

Accommodation Information

An antique house with space for living, studios, workshops and showrooms, located in the medieval nucleus of the remote village Faucogney-et-la-Mer (FR) amid the „Plateau des mille étangs“. The Villa facilitates slow living and serenity, thus space and inspiration to let artistic processes unfold and concise contemplation take place. A space with fertile ground for discourses, about vita contemplativa and activa, a space for temporary communities, a space for interventions and revitalisation.

The furnace forms the center of the common room and thus divides the room into kitchen/dining area and living room/sewing corner. The kitchen is fully equipped, also for cooking larger quantities. In the living room is a daybed, a couch and a piano. In the nearby corner is a sewing machine and a basic selection of threads and fabrics.

Above the common room there are further rooms with beds, a roof terrace and a bathroom. The rooms are bright, so they are also suitable for clean, quiet work.

On the second floor, above the «gîte», there is another, more rustic flat with the same floor size. In two rooms there is a small stove for heating. The flat also has a kitchen, toilet and hip bath/shower.

A three-room apartment consists of a small and a large bedroom, the kitchen with adjoining dining area, a sauna and a bathroom with bathtub and toilet. The kitchen is open to the dining area, with a table for about eight people and a fireplace. The whole apartment can be heated with the central heating (wood-heating; located on the first floor) and by the two fireplaces. The sauna is heated electrically.

The green area is located on the highest terrace level, directly on the edge of the forest. It offers a great view over the valley. Barely five minutes walking from the house.

Technical Information

The selection of artists or artist collectives is carried out by the collective Villekulla, after effective application and based on the principles of grassroots democracy.

The application is binding, and the place is definitely assigned after the selection. Should residents be unable to come to the residence at the specified time, the amount must still be paid or (better) a substitute must be found.

On arrival in Faucogney-et-la-Mer, one member of the collective Villekulla will be present to hand over the house to the residents and take it back before departure.

To use the workshops, an introduction must be made during the handover. In the event of confusion regarding the use of machinery or materials during the residence or in the event of loss and/or damage of furniture and/or infrastructure, the contact person must be informed, and the relevant item be replaced upon agreement with the contact person.

The collective Villekulla does not assume any liability for the damage of any objects from and of the house, especially no liability is assumed for the loss or damage of private objects or in case of injury of residents by third parties. The residents are recommended to take out an adequate insurance in a sufficient amount. The residents commit to treat the provided infrastructure, the surroundings and the neighbourhood with respect and care.

Location

The Villekulla is a place for and by artists, an old house with living‑, studio‑, exhibition- and working-spaces (which are regrettably, due to the twisty architecture of the house, not suited for wheelchair access). The Villekulla is located in the heart of the medieval village of Faucogney-et-la-Mer, in the south of the Vosges. The village is to be reached either by hitchhiking, cycling, walking or by car.

The villa's nearby forests are located in the nature reserve «Parc naturel régional des Ballons des Vosges». Here, humans hardly intervene, and the forest is largely left to its own. The wild trees overgrown with moss surrounded by countless small lakes of the «Plateau des Mille Étangs» leaves a mystical impression.
