Description

Nuoren Voiman Liitto (NVL) is a literary association founded in 1921. The objective is to organize quality literary events and a platform for writers, provide support, form literary networks as well as promote literature, creative writing and literary art in Finland.

Villa Sarkia is a residency programme in Sysmä, Finland, co-orginzed by NVL and the Public Library of Sysmä. The programme is for writers, translators, and work groups. Sysmä is located in Päijät-Häme, beautiful area of lakes and forests. Nuoren Voiman Liitto manages the selection of and communication with residents, whereas the municipality of Sysmä maintains the building and manages practical matters. The residency is primarily intended for writers under 40.

Outcome

Residents update the blog for the residency programme.

Accommodation Information

Villa Sarkia is intended for writers, authors, playwrights, and translators—primarily under the age of 40—who work with literary and creative writing. Selection is based mainly on a well-presented work plan; a previously published literary work is not required to apply.

Villa Sarkia is a wooden villa dating from the turn of the 20th century, situated in a peaceful location in the centre of Sysmä. The house has three writer’s rooms as well as shared facilities: entrance hall, kitchen, bathroom, sauna, living room, hall, and a large yard.

The Nuoren Voiman Liitto manages the residency programme, while the Municipality of Sysmä maintains the building. The residency provides bed linen, towels, and cleaning services. A registration fee of €100 is collected from all residents. NVL does not cover travel or other personal expenses.

During their stay, residents are asked to write one text for the residency blog and to submit an informal residency report and feedback after their stay.

Studio Information

All guests have a room to write and study in, and access to shared facilities, including living room, kitchen, shower, sauna, and toilets. The residence has three rooms for writers, two single and one double room. The double room is on the second floor at the end of the hall. The other room upstairs is a small single room. The occupant of this single room can also use the study room next door, with a balcony and an emergency exit. In addition, the residence also has a common living area. Villa Sarkia can house up to four writers or translators at the same time.

Technical Information

The kitchen is equipped with a stove, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, dishes, and cutlery. Sheets and towels are also available to the resident. All rooms are free of charge to residents. Food, travel costs, travel insurance, phone expenses etc will not be provided by the residency.
Villa Sarkia has broadband access with wifi, but no computers.
The residency has a printer for everyone to use. The library also offers photocopying / printing at 0.40 euros per sheet.
Unfortunately, the entrance to Villa Sarkia is not fully accessible. The staircase has four concrete steps, and there is a narrow heavy door that does not stay open by itself, and two thresholds.
