Description

Teshima ShinAiKan AIR is organised by usaginingen through Teshima GROW, a community initiative founded and led by usaginingen together with other families raising children on Teshima Island.
Established in 2023 in a renovated former orphanage, ShinAiKan functions as a cultural hub hosting exhibitions, performances, community events, and artist residencies.
The organisation aims to cultivate grassroots creativity and foster meaningful exchange between residents, artists, and visitors.

Teshima ShinAiKan AIR invites artists from all disciplines to stay and create on Teshima Island in Japan’s Seto Inland Sea. The island is one of the venues of the Setouchi Triennale and is internationally known for its unique combination of contemporary art, rural culture, and natural beauty.
The residency supports artists interested in exploring themes related to community, environment, everyday life, and time. Residents are offered space for research, site-specific creation, and cultural exchange in a peaceful setting where daily life naturally becomes part of the artistic process.
Artists are encouraged to connect with local residents, explore the island’s slow rhythms, and consider how artistic practice can meaningfully engage with small communities.

Accommodation Information

Residents stay in private rooms within a two-storey cultural facility. A shared kitchen, bathroom, and common areas are available. The accommodation is simple but comfortable, suitable for both individuals and families.

Studio Information

Residents are provided with private studio space within ShinAiKan. Studios are spacious and flexible, suitable for research, installation, multimedia work, sound, drawing, and other forms of production. Basic tools and equipment can be provided upon request. Artists may also work outdoors or in various public spaces on the island.

Technical Information

Basic tools such as hand tools and simple woodworking tools are available at no extra cost.
Specialised equipment — including welding machines, a 3D printer, and a ceramic kiln — is available for use with a mandatory usage fee, arranged in advance with the resident artist.
Projectors, audio equipment, and other multimedia tools may also be provided upon request for an additional fee.
Artists are free to work not only in their private studio but also in outdoor spaces and various public locations on the island, depending on the project.
