Description

Studio 88 Artist Residency provides a space to reflect and experiment for all creative thinkers and makers. They believe in the power of integrating art into everyday life to create positive change in the world. Studio 88 is particularly interested in how art can interact with nature, people and culture in daily life, challenging ways of thinking and also providing innovative alternatives. From artists’ self-exploration to artistic collaborations, from creatively engaging with the aspirations of schoolchildren to crafting with older generations, every creative project has the potential to change lives.

Co-founded by cultural managers Sasiwimon Wongjarin and Claire Rosslyn Wilson, Studio 88 desires to connect creative thinkers and contribute to local communities. Studio 88 provides space to experiment with the process of creating, as well as time out from busy day-to-day life in order to relax and reflect.

Studio 88 has an international outreach. It believes in the importance of connecting international creative thinkers with local communities and aims to foster this connection through meaningful and tangible projects. Keep an eye out on upcoming open calls for more information about the special projects.

The 4-week programme is titled Reviving Nature: Pollution Alert Artist Residency 2024. In their residency space in Doi Saket, 30 minutes from the centre of Chiang Mai, you explore the topic of air quality. The residency, with a select group of international and Thai artists, is facilitated by locally based arts manager and Studio 88 founder Sasiwimon Wongjarin (Aom).

The theme of this residency is very open and it can explore multifaceted aspects of pollution. It could encompass air, water, soil, noise, light, or any other form of pollution affecting our environment and communities. It could seek to examine the causes, consequences, and potential solutions related to pollution. It could also look at complex ways our systems are connected and how we can improve in areas such as urban planning and farming.

In Chiang Mai there are particular challenges with air pollution, due to things such as vehicles, factories, construction, garden burning, and agricultural and forest fires. Therefore, as part of the residency, you will be visiting RUEE Lab (the Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna), which researches the measurement, control and prevention of pm2.5 pollution. You don’t have to be an expert in air pollution, rather they are interested in seeing how creative approaches can contribute diverse perspectives to pollution and scientific processes. This can be a new area for you. They just ask that you bring your curiosity and an active interest in the topic.

Outcome

The aim of the residency is to provide time out from busy day-to-day life in order to create a tranquil space to create. There is no pressure to produce any final outputs by the end of the residency, although the team can help to facilitate connections with galleries or other initiatives if the resident is interested.

There will be a welcome dinner, two studio visits and a catered public event, which will be held as part of the Art for Air Festival 2023 in Chiangmai in June 2023.
