Description

Stone Oven House is a residence designed by artists for artists. It is located in an old farmhouse. The picturesque hillside offers panoramic views of the mountains and the historic center of Rorà. The total area of the estate is almost two hectares. On the territory, there is a forest with mushrooms and chestnuts, a meadow with herbs, a young orchard and a vegetable garden with Mediterranean diversity.

The residency supports authors working in visual art, music, design, sound art, video art, literature, theater, cinema, animation and other possible areas of art. They are providing studios and exhibition spaces, help with project implementation, and arrange comfortable accommodation.

The program does not cover the participants' daily expenses, but the sharing economy allows them to be kept to a minimum. The non-use of hired staff makes living costs in the residence affordable for everyone, regardless of the income. At the same time, they try to organise the living conditions at the highest level.

At the residency they practice a communal form of organising everyday life. But it is quite far from common ideas and stereotypes. Unlike traditional communes, there are no permanent residents, except for the organisers of the project. However, they welcome and support cyclical returns of the guests and resident artists who are already familiar with everyday life of the house. The idea of the horizontal structure of universal equality is not applicable here, as well as the vertical hierarchical structure.

The organisers are always ready to provide invitation letters for applying for financial support to foundations and relevant institutions.

Outcome

At the end of the residence period, participants present projects in their own workshops, on an open day. It is possible to organize an independent exhibition or performance. The result of staying in the residence can be a completed project or just a stage of it.

Studio Information

There are two studios of 12m², two studios of 17m², one studio of 33m² and 3 open air lofts 17m², 33m² and 40m². Beside the studios artists can use open door spaces of the territory, which includes two hectares of land.

Accommodation Information

Each artist is provided with a private space to rest. The accommodation includes both cozy single rooms and shared spaces, depending to individual preferences. Bedrooms are equipped with essential amenities, ensuring a seamless blend of practicality and inspiration. Comfortable beds, ample storage, and well-lit workspaces create an environment conducive to artistic pursuits. Whether you prefer the solitude of a single room or the camaraderie of shared spaces, our bedrooms are tailored to meet your needs.

For shared accommodations, they carefully match residents with compatible roommates, fostering a sense of community. The aim is to provide a space where artists can find respite, focus on their work, and build connections with like-minded individuals.

Technical Information

Stone Oven House is able to provide some tools and materials suitable for artists working in different media. They have sound systems, laptops, dvd-players, TV screens, light spots, projectors, easels, paints, brushes, sewing machines, basic electric tools to work with wood, stone and metal.

Artists are welcome to use some recyclable materials from the storage and natural resources from the territory of the residency. Such as stones, woods, clay or plants.

Location

Rorà is a mountain village in the Metropolitan City of Turin in the Italian region Piedmont, located about 50 km southwest of Turin. Situated 5 km from Luserna San Giovanni, the small center of Rorà lies at the foot of Mount Frioland in the upper valley of the river Luserna.

In its territory are the quarries that since antiquity were used to extract the renowned Luserna stone, and the houses of the village shows beautiful walls made with this stone. It was the scene of several campaigns against the Waldensians and is historically linked to Joshua Janavel. Nearby Torre Pellice is the center of the Waldensian church.

A distinctive feature of the Waldensian movement was a high level of education. There was a school in every village. At the end of the 19th century, literacy rates in Waldensian settlements were among the highest in Europe. And today, despite the relative distance from the big cities, Val Pellice is famous for its rich cultural life. Literary and music festivals, farm fairs, and exhibitions of contemporary art are held here throughout the year.
