Description

Established in 2015 by Shandaken Projects and Storm King Art Center, the Shandaken: Storm King residency is a unique collaboration that cultivates a process-focused artist experience at Storm King Art Center. Since its founding, the program has grown into a renowned opportunity for artists from across the country to invest uninterrupted time in process while living within one of the world’s most important outdoor museums.

Outcome

There are no requirements to produce artwork and all engagements scheduled for artists are opt-in.

Studio Information

Shandaken: Storm King is located within the Art Center's grounds, but at a remove from public areas. Residents may enjoy Storm King Art Center during the hours it is open to the public.

Residents are housed with their family or collaborator/s in a large home with historic details and modern updates. The house is located very close to the New York State Thruway, so residents should expect to hear the white noise of vehicles passing in the background. The house is furnished and is equipped with four bedrooms (three with full or queen beds, one with two twins), two full bathrooms, one living room, an eat-in kitchen, and a 300-square-foot room set aside for studio space.

If two artists who are life partners, but who work independently as artists, desire to work in two separate studios while onsite, one bedroom can be retooled into workspace for this purpose, leaving three bedrooms available for occupancy.

Residents are asked to bring their own tools and materials.

Accommodation Information

Shandaken: Storm King provides a four-bedroom house (three with full or queen beds, and one with two twin beds) where residents are housed with their families or collaborators (ie one successful applicant with their family or one collaborative group at a time). The house also includes a room reserved for use as a studio. Although the house is located on the grounds of Storm King Art Center, visitors to Storm King are not permitted to access the residency. Residency guests are permitted during the day with advance notice. Overnight guests are not allowed at Shandaken: Storm King.
