Saxemara Artist Studios was founded by John Dunsö, a songwriter, artist, carpenter, producer, and project manager within the cultural sector. Before this, he spent many years as a guitarist in the pop band Billie the Vision and the Dancers. He grew up in Saxemara but has spent most of his professional life living in Malmö. Saxemara has always been an important place to him - the forest, the sea, and the calm have made it an ideal creative environment.
In early 2024, he purchased an undeveloped plot of land in Saxemara, and began building Saxemara Artist Studios. At the end of the same year, he was awarded a development grant from SydostLeader, which made it possible to move forward with the project. By the summer of 2025, the site was fully completed, and in September of the same year he welcomed the first residency participants.
VISION: Saxemara Artist Studios has a strong focus on sustainable creative practice. This means that the balance between creative work and the rest of life is considered more important than the outcome of one’s work. For those who wish, there are opportunities to take part in shared conversations and meals, as well as training sessions and excursions into the surrounding nature.
The aim is to collectively create an unpretentious and welcoming environment where creativity is not forced, but instead emerges naturally from feeling inspired and balanced—both mentally and physically.
Saxemara Artist Studios is a transdisciplinary artist residency, located in Blekinge in southern Sweden. It offers professional musicians, artists, writers etc. an inspiring place to live and create, next to the forest and the sea. People are welcome alone or in groups of 3 (max). The stay aims to explore and work on small or large projects, both new and established collaborations.
If you are not arriving by car, there are direct trains from Malmö to Ronneby, and we are happy to pick you up at the train station. On the way to Saxemara, the organisers will stop at a grocery store so you can buy food. There are regular bus connections into town, making it easy to restock whenever you need.
Accommodation Information
The residency can host 1–3 people at a time, who live and work in separate studios/cabins. All three studios include a bed, bed linen, towels, a desk, chair, clothes storage, and Wi-Fi. They are located approximately ten meters from the main building, where the bathroom is situated.
All residents share a main building with a kitchen, dining area, and bathroom with laundry facilities. As a guest, you are responsible for your own meals and will have your own shelf in the freezer, refrigerator, and pantry.
In the lush garden there is a wooden deck with lounge furniture, a barbecue area overlooking the meadow, and a large lawn where you can spread out a blanket. Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, bicycles are available to borrow, and there is on-site parking.

Location
The residency is located in the center of the village of Saxemara, known for its rich cultural heritage and its unique combination of forest and archipelago. With only around 500 inhabitants, the village offers a sense of calm that makes it ideal for both creative work and reflection. Right next door there is a café that sells basic groceries as well as ready-made sandwiches, pastries, and coffee.
Just a few hundred meters away you will find beautiful forest walks, running trails, beaches, and jetties for swimming, as well as a floating sauna with views of the islands, which can be booked free of charge. There is also the option to rent a tennis court or a kayak for those interested in getting out onto the sea.
Ronneby is the nearest town (7 km away) and has around 12,000 inhabitants in the urban area. It is known for its spa history and the award-winning Brunnsparken, often referred to as Sweden’s most beautiful park. In Ronneby you will find everything from well-stocked grocery stores, hairdressers, and second-hand shops to high-quality restaurants and cafés.
