Salt Road Studio provides shared accommodation, utilities, workspace, local support, round-trip flights to and from Japan, and a $1,000 living-cost grant for selected residents.

Artists are responsible for passport costs, visa or entry-related costs if applicable, travel insurance, health insurance, meals and personal expenses beyond the $1,000 living-cost grant, project materials, specialized tools or equipment, software, local personal travel, and any taxes or reporting obligations related to grants or support received.

Salt Road Studio does not provide visa sponsorship, visa services, immigration advice, legal advice, travel insurance, health insurance, materials, specialized equipment, or coverage for personal expenses beyond the stated residency support.

Application guidelines:

Artists apply online through the Salt Road Studio application form. The application includes a $25 non-refundable application fee. Applicants must be 18 or older by the date of travel and must be able to travel to Japan for the full residency period.

Applications are reviewed by an independent jury using published selection criteria. Selection is based on the quality of the artist’s work, the clarity of the proposal, the fit between the proposed work and the residency setting, and the applicant’s ability to benefit from the time and support provided.

Salt Road Studio is a New York-based artist residency organization supporting focused creative work in Akō, Hyōgo, Japan. The organization was created to give artists time, space, housing, local support, and funding for a short-term residency in Japan without charging tuition or residency fees. The programme is built around independent selection, practical support, and the value of sustained work in a quiet regional setting.

Salt Road Studio offers a fully funded three-week artist residency in Akō, Japan. The programme is designed for artists who would benefit from time, space, and distance from their regular working environment. Residents receive accommodation, workspace, local support, transportation to and from Japan, and a living-cost grant.

The residency is open to artists working across visual art, research-based practice, photography, installation, writing, sound, performance, digital media, and related disciplines. The programme supports both production and research. Artists may arrive with a defined project or use the residency to explore a new body of work, place-based research, or a period of focused retreat.

The residency is intended for artists interested in working away from major art-market centers, with time to observe, research, make, and reflect in a slower environment. Akō’s relationship to salt, travel routes, craft, memory, and landscape gives the programme its name and conceptual foundation.

Basic Japanese/local Japanese-language support is available for practical matters during the residency.

Outcome

No fixed public outcome is required. Residents are expected to use the time for research, production, reflection, or development of a body of work. Artists may choose to share documentation, a short written reflection, images of work in progress, or participate in an informal public or online presentation, but the residency is not structured around a mandatory exhibition.

Residents are housed in shared accommodation in a residential property in Akō, Hyōgo, Japan. The accommodation includes basic household utilities and shared living space for the duration of the residency. Residents should expect a communal live/work environment with private or semi-private sleeping arrangements depending on final placement and the number of residents selected.

Residents should bring their own specialized tools, laptops, cameras, materials, software, hard drives, and project-specific equipment.

Basic household infrastructure and workspace are provided. Specialized production facilities such as a kiln, darkroom, print shop, woodshop, metal shop, recording studio, or fabrication lab are not currently available.
