Sable provides basic art supplies as well as the container of community.

Artists are asked to contribute $50 a day to support their stay. This helps the organisers to cover the costs of food, pay the staff, and continue to maintain & expand the infrastructure provided during your stay. Artists must provide supplies specific to their medium/project.

Sable’s BIPOC Artist Fund offers scholarships for Summer Artists and Guest Artists in Residence. If you are Black, Indigenous, and/or a Person of Color, you are eligible for a small scholarship! Make sure to check the box on the application. It is important to us that Sable is accessible to all! No one will be turned away if you can't afford our residency fee. Description

The Sable Project started with a forested piece of land near a mountain called Sable, and an idea to bring creative people together in order to grow food and make art. The organisers built an Artist Residency Program for artists across disciplines that is off-grid, environmentally engaged, grounded by physical work, and collaborative. It is designed to foster creativity by removing some of the obstacles that keep artists from creating- space, time, and supplies- while providing new influences in an inspiring environment. Each season is unique and each residency experience evolves through the input of everyone involved.

The Artist Residency offerings are for adult artists of all ages and disciplines seeking space, time, and a place to focus on their art. They are specifically looking for artists confident in their creative processes, comfortable living in community, and willing to camp out for the duration of their stay.

Sable is off-the-grid! They live in the woods in Vermont’s Green Mountains in Abenkai Territory. There is no electricity, cell service, or wifi. The organisers invite artists to depart from their often hyper-connected routines in order to engage deeply with their surroundings and cultivate a community of care for each other. The Residency Periods are 2-10 days long and are self-structured. The residents have the entire Sable Land as their playground/studio for the duration of their stay.

Outcome

Each 10 Day Residency culminates in the bi-weekly Food and Art Fridays public event, where artists are welcome (but not required) to share their work and connect with the local Vermont community. Though so much art has been created there in the last decade, many of the outcomes of an experience at The Sable Project are not expressed in a "product" created. Many name the outcome of the residency as a deepening of their creative practice, a building of inspiration and friendship with fellow artists, a greater sense of presence in their life and more.

Accommodation Information

Artists are provided a tent platform on the beautiful Sable Land. Artists are expected to provide their own camping/outdoor gear. Though they are off-grid, they do have a bathhouse with a toilet & shower, as well as a kitchen with running water and a propane stove.

All meals are provided! The communal kitchen is stocked with local and high-quality food, and artists are encouraged to harvest produce fresh from the garden throughout their stay. Breakfast and lunch are self-serve, and each day ends with a communal dinner. At the beginning of each residency period, a rotating schedule will be created for the communal cooking and cleaning.

Studio Information

They have 4 studio spaces and a truly gorgeous stage! Artists are also encouraged to make themselves at home in the garden & the surrounding woods.
