One room is free of charge for the artists who implement a community project. A small travel budget and some materials or rentals against receipts. Administrative/PR help.

All artists pay a registration fee (€ 150) after the selection, it qurantees the place, and deposit € 120, which is refundable after the residency. Independently working artists pay a small rent, and the association covers the rest of the house rent and facilities. Travel and everyday living expenses. For artists in residence, exhibition space rent is slightly more affordable (50–100 € depending on the size/rooms) than for others.

Description

Are you looking for time to focus on your art — or new ways to meet audiences? The RaumArs residency offers the opportunity to work in an inspiring maritime city where a historic environment, an active community, and international art meet. Here you can relax, experiment boldly, and create something new together with others. Apply and let Rauma surprise you.

RaumArs is one of the oldest artist residencies in Finland (established in 1997) and the third oldest in the country. It is a non-profit, independent association run by a volunteer board, some exhibition supervisors and a part-time executive director.

The residency is located in Art House RaumArs, a renovated wooden building from 1925 in central Rauma town. The approximately 200 m² house includes accommodation for artists, gallery spaces, and a large garden available for artistic use.

RaumArs hosts 1–3 artists at a time, including individuals, couples, small groups, families, curators, and researchers from all artistic fields. Residencies last 1–5 months and are selected based on a high-quality work plan to be carried out in Rauma or the wider Satakunta region.
The program focuses on community-based, participatory, and socially engaged art. Artists may develop projects in collaboration with local communities or work independently on their own practice or research.

RaumArs collaborates with local schools, cultural institutions, museums, a music school, care homes, and various associations and festivals. The residency also offers opportunities to engage with Rauma’s two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Residencies may conclude with an exhibition at the Art House RaumArs gallery. The space may also be reserved for working purposes. An annual open call is organized for separate exhibitions.

Artists may additionally apply to use the gallery space (rental) or the garden (free of charge). Any plans for exhibitions or open studios during the residency must be included in the application.

Outcome

A community project or independent work, lectures and other evens case by case.

Accommodation Information

The well-equipped residence apartment has three rooms: single and twin bedrooms with private bathrooms, a small study and a shared kitchen. On the gallery side there are three rooms open to the public for exhibitions, workshops or meetings and an office/kitchen in the middle of the house. Artists-in-residence have access to the entire house.

Studio Information

In the Art House RaumArs there are three rooms for exhibitions or events, also for other than residency artists to apply and use. Still, most of the workshops happen at schools or similar spaces. E.g. for the dancers an alternative dance project is recommended. In some cases, artist can negotiate a workshop space from our partners. The “studio” in the apartment is more like a small study room.
