Application guidelines:

Applicants will be selected by a jury composed by RAMA's coordinator, artist Paulo Brighenti and the guest curator. In the application, will be considered the quality of the candidate's work and the proposal submitted to the residency, as well as innovation and artistic experimentation regarding to the general program of RAMA, on topics such as history, territory, material and immaterial heritage of the region, the community, sustainability, ecology and the balance between systems.
They accept applications from artists working with the most diverse media, wishing to develop their research in the context provided by RAMA and to establish contacts with Portuguese and international artistic and scientific circles. RAMA's program aims to follow, support and publicize the work and research developed by the creators and researchers during their stay in the Residency, involving them with the local culture and reality, fulfilling RAMA's general aims.

About the application:

  • The applicant must indicate the period wanted for the Residency program, start and end dates, which should coincide with the beginning and end of each month / Indicate specific technical or other needs in order to develop the work during the program.
  • The applicant shall mention if he/she needs accommodation, and if he/she needs a recommendation letter or certificate aimed at financing or other support.

RAMA – Art Residency is located in the municipality of Torres Vedras, in the west part of Portugal. Aimed at research and experimentation by national and international artists, researchers and curators, it promotes the interaction between professionals and the crossing of artistic practices, the sharing of experiences and knowledge, and relationship with the local community, culture, crafts, traditional knowledge, and with the region’s history and landscape.
RAMA, as part of a rural landscape in Maceira village, parish of Dois Portos, and Alfeiria village, parish of Carvoeira e Carmões, intends to develop as an advanced research center in the arts field and at the intersection with science and education, looking for ideas for sustainability, ecology and the balance between systems.

The Program applies to two types of Artistic Residency:

  • Residency with studio and accommodation, which includes the complete Residency program and the frequency of the activities included in RAMA’s general program.
  • Residency with studio and without accommodation, which includes the full Residency program and the frequency of the activities included in RAMA’s general program.

The residency program provides a specialized and immersive work environment, and accompanies and advertizes the work developed by the creators and researchers during their stay in the residency, involving them with the local culture and community, and the contemporary artistic context.
The Artistic Residency lasts from 1 to 4 months or for longer periods depending on the nature of the applicants' projects. The program includes::

  • Personalized mentoring and consultancy for each project by RAMA director, artist Paulo Brighenti, with a guest curator.
  • Mentorships and studio visits, discussion and support for the work done in the studios, by artists, researchers and curators invited to each Residency.
  • Exhibitions and artists’ studios visits and participation in meetings, lectures and other initiatives organized by RAMA.
  • Visits to local points of interest, in order to discover the region’s material and intangible heritage.
  • Publication of Artists in Residence's and Guest Artists’ projects on RAMA’s website, with interviews, documentation about the work and other activities organized by the artists themselves.
  • RAMA supports applicants who, being accepted at the Residency, may apply for funding or scholarships.
Studio Information

The Studio, which is 5 minutes walk from the accommodation, is set in an old wine cellar next to Paulo Brighenti's studio. With about 70 m2 covered and 40 m2 of open-air area for outdoor work, it is furnished and accommodates 3 to 5 residents.

The Studio’s opening hours are from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm. Residents can use the studio outside these hours by previous agreement with the coordinator, and respecting silence, without disturbing the local inhabitants.

The Studio has plenty of natural light and electric lighting suitable for working. It has water and heating.

Accommodation Information

The accommodation of the Artistic Residency, which is 5 minutes walking from the studio, is installed in an old primary school built in 1981, on the initiative of the mothers of the village of Alfeiria. The adaptation of the school in a house to welcome the creators, praises the entrepreneurial spirit of these mothers, preserving their memory and maintaining the school house dedicated to learning and knowledge sharing.
With two single rooms and a double room, the house simultaneously accommodates 3 to 4 people. It has a bathroom, a kitchen and a common living and dining room. It also has an art library with a predominance of monographs and exhibition catalogs by Portuguese artists. The house has a lot of natural light and is surrounded by a large outdoor space with open views over the valley. The house is equipped with:

  • wi-fi, water, electricity and heating
  • kitchen equipped with fridge, stove and oven, kettle, coffee maker, toaster, microwave and a table
  • shared toilet and shower
  • washing machine and dryer

Other information:

  • weekly general cleaning
  • individual clothes are handled by the resident and can be washed in the washing machine that exists in the studio’s facilities or in a laundry nearby
  • residents will be able to do their grocery shopping in the village of Alfeiria within 5 minutes walk or buy from street vendors, who stop in the villages of Maceira and Alfeiria on scheduled days during the week. It is also possible to go to a nearby supermarket, previously asking for transport
  • the artists and researchers in residency are responsible for keeping private and common indoor and outdoor spaces clean, for the good use of the equipment and for saving energy consumption
  • the accommodation is located close to houses in the village, so make sure you do not make noise after 10 pm
  • the environment in the village must be respected and preserved
Technical Information

RAMA has a video projector, camera and computer that can be made available to residents.
In the Studio tools for different types of work, such as wood, metal and stone, are available.

Location

RAMA is located about 40 minutes driving from Lisbon’s center and from the airport, between the municipalities of Torres Vedras, Sobral de Monte Agraço, Arruda dos Vinhos and Alenquer, and it is served by highways, public transport, post office, commerce and services.
