Accommodation and workspaces are available in various areas of Château de Kerminy: indoor and outdoor studios, shared kitchens, and collective spaces designed for exchange and experimentation. Residency operational costs are covered by the OPEN association. Although the residency does not provide direct financial grants (given its rural location where funding support is harder to obtain than in urban areas), its accessible contribution model ensures financial inclusiveness. Nevertheless, Kerminy offers an experimental rural context to implement transition art practices. Artists are encouraged to apply for external funding to support their stay and engage with the site for an extended period.

Each artist must contribute a minimum of €20/day to help cover operational costs and shared expenses. This contribution is paid in advance before the residency begins. The minimum contribution is €20/day per artist to cover water, electricity, taxes, insurance, and firewood. There is no salaried team to manage the site; each artist participates in cleaning and maintenance. This contribution is essential to maintain the self-managed nature of the space.

Description

OPEN is a self-managed artist residency located at Château de Kerminy in Brittany, France. The residency is set in a unique rural environment that combines historical heritage (former botanical park), biodiversity (wetland, forest, prairie, etc.) and creation.

Kerminy is a hybrid space that connects artistic creation, agroecology, and traditional craftsmanship. It functions as a learning territory dedicated to creative, ecological, and social transitions. Kerminy actively promotes experimentation, knowledge sharing, and community engagement through artistic residencies, workshops, and research programs (art, science & territory). The site is integrated into the cultural and ecological landscape of southern Finistère, enriched by local partnerships such as art schools, universities, research labs, the farming community, French institutions, and other cultural structures in France and abroad.

The residency is open to artists, researchers, and cultural practitioners of all disciplines seeking an immersive and collaborative environment. There is no selection process; the residency is accessible to anyone willing to contribute to operational costs (minimum contribution of €20/day + some time dedicated to site maintenance). The residency duration is flexible, ranging from a few days to 2 months.
 
Outcome

OPEN encourages artists to interact with other artists and the local context, developing projects that explore the intersection of art and ecology, but there is no obligation to produce any specific outcome. Artists regularly organize presentations, performances, and collaborative workshops. Outcomes are diverse and can include exhibitions, installations, performances, or research documentation.

Accommodation Information

The residency offers self-managed accommodations. Residents have access to shared kitchens, around fifteen rooms, and workspaces. The rooms are comfortable and located in the Château de Kerminy. The site is rustic (17th-century château) yet well-equipped, offering an ideal setting for focused work and exchange. The site is not ideal for young children due to the nature of the spaces (the château is wooden and quite resonant) and the ongoing artistic activities.

Studio Information

Kerminy provides various workspaces, including a library, a 9m x 6m dance room, a larger 12m x 6m area (a large garage equipped with a dance mat), a 5-hectare wooded area, meadows, orchards, a food garden, attics converted into workspaces, and workshop areas for woodworking and metalwork. The site hosts permanent artists with specialized workshops for woodworking, ceramics, and sound or digital experimentation (hackerspace).

Technical Information

The residency offers basic tools for woodworking, ceramics, sound editing, and other artistic practices. Collaborative workshops and knowledge sharing reinforce technical support for artists. The residency provides access to:
• Small woodworking and metal tools
• Projectors
• Amplified speakers
• Outdoor research spaces (forests, wetlands, orchard, meadows with donkeys, sheep, goats...)
• Equipment for clay work (in collaboration with permanent artists)
• A hackerspace equipped with Linux computers and open-source software (sound, video...)
For additional technical needs, the residency encourages artists to bring their own specialized equipment or collaborate with the permanent artists on-site.
