Description

Nomadic Red Corner is a collaborative project between the Mongolian Contemporary Art Support Association and Art Space 976+, dedicated to the development of ger districts of Ulaanbaatar city through the implementation of creative community development and artist residency programs. Today Ger districts are home to nearly 800,000 people, the majority of them are rural-urban migrants and low-income families. Ger districts have very limited access to utilities and infrastructure. Low-quality life in these areas affects community health, caused by pollution and an unpleasant environment, with no street lighting, pedestrian roads, green park and public spaces. Migrants are often stigmatised by native residents and seen as the source of a high level of poverty and urban sprawl.

The initiative aims to bring together professional artists, residents, volunteers, and organizations in order to dispel negative assumptions about ger districts and to create a more attractive and friendly environment for its residents and visitors.

Since its inception in 2020, Nomadic Red Corner has collaborated with European Union, Goethe Institute, the Ministry of Culture of Mongolia, Alliance Francois, the Embassy of the United States, the Embassy of the Czech Republic, the Sukhbaatar District Government and the Magic Land Community Center, creating artistic neighbourhoods covering around 24.000 sq.m area in Chingeltei, Sukhbaatar and Bayanzurkh districts, where artists created paintings, sculptures and installations. Various public art events, exhibitions and workshops have been organised involving youth living in these areas.

Outcome

During their stay, each resident artist should make some contribution to the community. Contribution can be in form of artwork created in the Ger district, or workshops organised at the community centre. The project team and community centre will provide support for making plans and provide necessary supplies and equipment.

Studio Information

The Nomadic Red Corner compound has one extra Ger next to the residential dwelling, which shall be used for storing various supplies and materials and for a public meeting. Magic Land 2 Community Center has a library, coffee shop, conference room and classrooms for dance, music and painting. The outdoor area of the courtyard has a playground and basketball court.

Accommodation Information

The residency compound has two Gers. Each Ger has 3 beds, kitchen amenities, sheets, towels, shelves and other necessary supplies for accommodating 6 artists in total. Ger (often called a yurt) is a round-shaped traditional Mongolian housing with a cone-like roof, covered by felt under canvas, which is used for thousands of years as a dwelling by nomads in the steppes of the country. The wooden structure and furniture of Gers are beautifully designed and made by local artists, using contemporary and traditional elements. Artists are allowed to use showers and bathrooms located inside the community centre, which is located within 50 meters. As Gers are not connected to infrastructure, artists need to carry water from the community centre and use them for cooking, washing kitchen stuff, floors etc. Instructions for living will be provided.

Technical Information

The project will make sure at least one Mongolian artist will be taking part in the residency program, who shall help international artists know the local art scene, meet artists and visit ongoing exhibitions and explore different areas of the city. The project team will also seek possibilities of supporting international artists, if they have special projects in mind, to implement with local artists.

Location

As part of our initiative, Nomadic Red Corner – International Artist Residency was established with the support from the Goethe International Relief Fund 2021 by the end of 2021 and settled in the courtyards of Magic Land Community Center 2, at Uliastai area of Bayanzurkh district. Residency compound consists of 3 traditional Mongolian dwellings “Ger”, two of which are built for accommodating artists and one for storage and public usage.
