It depends on the project. They work with grant programs, and usually, when announcing an open call, they cover: accommodation, travel, per diem, money for materials.

There is no artist fee for the residency. If an artist applies outside of the open call, they must cover their own travel, per diem, and all expenses required by their project.

The artist must fill out this form if they wish to apply for a residency at their own expense. Or they should expect the form of the new open call for a fully funded residency, which will be published on the Instagram page.

Description

Cultural Traffic is a Kharkiv based NGO dedicated to artistic and research projects. They aim to support artists and cultural actors through residency programs, and reinforce acknowledge about local culture through research and educational projects.
Their main activities since 2021: exhibitions, walks, animations, research and heritage preservation projects and residency programs.

Slow River House is an art residency project in the Kharkiv region, providing a space for work and relaxation, and is located in the countryside. It is a place where you can slow down far from the city, retreat and focus on your current project, do research for a new project, work on concepts and texts, find time for production and experiments with new techniques, or take a break from work and devote time to rest and recovery.
The location of the residency encourages participants to explore the local natural landscape, the system of reservoirs, and take long walks through the ravines and forests. The residence is located near Kharkiv, and aims to provide a place to work primarily for cultural actors from the eastern regions of Ukraine. At the same time, representatives of other regions of Ukraine and foreign artists can also participate in the residency if their practice is related to the local culture and they understand the risks associated with being in the border regions of eastern Ukraine.

Outcome

At the end of the residency, the participant must submit a narrative report describing their experience in the residency, and their work progress (if this was the objective of the residency). They also encourage the artists to hold a public event with the local community, but this is not mandatory.

Accommodation Information

Residents are invited to live in a traditional Ukrainian house (mazanka), adapted to the needs of a modern lifestyle. The house has a kitchen-living room, a room, a shower, and a toilet. The house is surrounded by an orchard and a field, where residents can spend time.

Studio Information

The house has a place to work at a desk. There is also a small workshop house on the territory for work in the summer. The organisers are happy to welcome artists who work in multimedia, with text, graphics, video, and sound. Additionally, in the summer they are open to artists who work in various techniques with materials such as clay, plaster, wood and others that require more space.

Technical Information

Among the equipment available to residents are: a projector, recording microphones, a tripod, a printer, scanner, and laptop. The summer workshop has a workbench with vises, and vintage tools for working with wood.

Location

Slow River House is located in a rural area. The village of Staryi Merchyk (formerly Vsesviatske) is located 40 kilometers from Kharkiv in the direction to Poltava, in the Slobozhanshchyna region. The first Cossack settlers appeared here in 1617–1640. There is a small river, Mokryi Merchyk. According to one version, rivers with the root “mer-” were so named for their slow flow — slow, meaning “dead”. In the center of the village are hidden the picturesque ruins of the Shydlovskyi estate (late 18th century). The palace is surrounded by a large landscape-style garden.

Unfortunately, today the Shydlovskyi estate, which is a monument of national importance, is in ruins. Today, about 2,000 people live in the village, including IDPs from Kharkiv and the eastern towns of Kharkiv region. The residency building itself is located on the edge of the village. The area invites to walk and cycle to local rivers, many ponds, pine and deciduous forests and wide fields. There is a fruit garden near the house, where berries and vegetables grow.
There are up to 10 shops with food and household goods in the village, within a 20-25 minutes walk from the house. Fresh homemade products can also be ordered from locals. Key purchases and delivery of heavy materials are carried out by the private car of the team. The bus stop is also located 20-25 minutes walk away, there are regular buses to Kharkiv.
