The residency fee is 400 €/person/month (incl. taxes) or 200 € per person for first month plus organizing an event that is open to the public, such as a workshop, lecture, exhibition or reading circle – or by writing a text that is related to one’s own work and can be published on the residency’s blog.

Description

Established in 1985, The Nelimarkka Artist Residency welcomes professional artists from various fields from Finland and abroad and is part of the Nelimarkka Residency Program.

The artist residency is based in the studio villa Villa Nelimarkka, built by artist Eero Nelimarkka for his family in 1932, with views of the surrounding fields and lake. The building is located next to the Nelimarkka Museum, approximately four kilometres from the centre of Alajärvi.

The application period is in March each year.

Outcome

By organizing an event that is open to the public, such as a workshop, lecture, exhibition or reading circle – or by writing a text that is related to one’s own work and can be published on the residency’s blog the resident gets a 200 € discount on the first month’s residency fee. The event is not obligatory and is always arranged separately. The museum provides the necessary materials.

Accommodation Information

The residence is equipped with linen, kitchenware, bicycle, laundry facilities (at the museum) and Wi-Fi. The shared kitchen, shower/toilet and living room are located downstairs. Mostly during the summer, occasional events may be held on the ground floor.

Two artists or working couples or a working group of a maximum four can work at a time.

Studio Information

1st studio-bedroom combination: a lockable bedroom & a separate open studio space without a door just above the staircase.

2nd studio-bedroom combination: lockable combined bedroom and studio.

Both studios and bedrooms are located upstairs.

Location

The residency is located in a rural setting, four kilometres from the small Alajärvi town centre, close to a lake and natural surroundings. The immediate environment is one of rural solitude and stillness, perfect for those wishing to escape into the countryside and work without distraction. The residence is situated in the south of the Ostrobothnian Lake District area. Alajärvi is a municipality of Finland. It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Southern Ostrobothnia region. The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
Residents are living in the beautiful old villa in relative solitude. Artists are encouraged to adapt their practise to the conditions of the house, and use the surroundings as an art environment. Bicycles enable local transportation but aside from that, residents are relatively alone in their surroundings.
