Mothership NYC
Mothership NYC is a combined live-work space and presentation arena for international artists across multiple disciplines in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, NYC. The mission is to support and promote artists at all career levels through residencies, public shows and collaborative opportunities build sustainable transnational artist networks and help retain creative forces in New York City.
Born out of the needs of emerging artists who come to New York City to take part in the cultural nexus, Mothership NYC was founded in 2005. With a huge roof deck serving as an outdoor stage, our community of artist peers gradually and organically evolved into a destination for art events and performances of all kinds, as well as lively dinner parties and improvised salons uniting creatives from many disciplines. The addition of an extra live-work space in late 2016 provided an impetus to professionalize the residency program. Participating international artists-in-residence are now selected based on merits as well as on their commitment to collectivism. It is aimed to host between 6 to 12 official artists-in-residence per year for periods from 1 to 3 months, as well as several short-term visiting creatives.
Today, the salons occur on a regular monthly schedule: On the 2nd Tuesday of every month, Mothership artists share the floor with local peers for presentations of their work, creative exchanges and good cheer. Additionally, the residents produce indoor and outdoor public events at a prolific pace, both onboard the Mothership and on their sister platform Last Frontier NYC.
The residencies support contemporary visual art practices and trans-disciplinary projects (including performance and performing arts, music, writing and curatorial proposals) promoting exchange, debate, experimentation and collaborative work. There are different types of residencies available: Production, Exploration, Micro-Residency, Presentation.
Residency Programming:
- Fellow artists and other creatives/cultural workers are invited for the monthly open salon for an open-air art party/intimate indoor gathering where they can present their work to a very receptive audience of local artist peers and other arts professionals and appreciators
- Artists’ dinners for international and NYC-based creative colleagues are hosted occasionally
- During the warm months, the roof deck is used as a stage for creative productions across several disciplines
- Residents can organize open studio events during their stay, including participation in the neighborhood-wide extravaganza, greenpointopenstudios.com
- Collaborative productions can potentially also be hosted on one of the sister platforms, Last Frontier NYC and/or the KWBS rooftop stage
Artists-in-residence work on a project and show results or do their research without a fixed outcome. There are no mandatory requirements, but most residents choose to avail themselves of the opportunity to present their work at the monthly salon.
- "Screw Room" has a separate, moderately sized work area that allows visiting artists to work in virtually every discipline but ceramics and large-scale sculpture.
- "Cabin" only has a work desk and limited floor space, so this room is more suited for computer-based work (literature, curatorial, graphic design, etc.) and small-scale drawing.
