Application guidelines:

The residency workshops are awarded after a review of the applications by the selection committee (made up of the Modzi Arts team and former residents ) on the basis of the relevance and quality of the proposed project. The residency programme aims to focus on experimenting, research projects, with new artistic forms.

The application must contain all of the following documents:

Presentation of your artistic project (800 characters max. including spaces)
Significant portfolio from the last 2 years (max. 10 pages with captions)
Biography (max. 400 characters including spaces) and CV (max. 2 pages)

Description

Modzi Artist-In-Residence is opening space from May to November 2026! They welcome local and international artists to working in visual arts, music, design, performance, curation and art research to come and toil the art scene in Zambia. ​

​The residency programme comes to life within the activities of Modzi Arts in Ibex Hill, Lusaka, Zambia. Numerous exhibitions, residencies, research, artist talks, performances and workshops are organised throughout the year, encouraging residents to get involved. The Modzi AIR is open to artists of all mediums and project themes. Modzi introduces the network to artists, curators, cultural practices, galleries, heritage and history to strengthen the exchange within our local community. The selection of winners is not based on the artist's nationality, gender or age but artistic process and connection to past projects.

Accommodation Information

A 5 Bedroom home, with shared facilities (bathroom, living room, kitchen with gas cooking facilities). A laundry washing, juicy, coffee, blender machines are available for use.
The house is situated in Ibex Hill, next door to Modzi Arts, with a continental Restaurant, liquor store, pharmacy, Nandos, Bar, bakery, street market and stores within 4min walk.

Maximum 2 residents can be hosted at once. Groups, non-artist partners and children are welcome.

Studio Information

Within the artistic residency, 2 to 3 artists can be hosted over the same period, each with their own individual studio. In addition, on-site accommodation for 2 people can be provided. The spaces made available enable real discussions to take place, conducive to exchange and creation but also we share space.

The residency period is between 1 and 3 months. All the teams speak English, providing real support for the residents. In fact, both through targeted artistic mentoring and by putting them in touch with the cultural and artistic actors in Lusaka or within Africa. This also takes the form of a weekly public presentation of the work carried out. Then we have final presentations which can take various forms (open studio, exhibition, reading, performance etc.).
