Description

In 2020, the META foundation was founded as a non-profit organisation to provide programming to August House. As such, the residency programme falls under the ambit of the META foundation. Fifteen years ago, when everyone was leaving the city, artists started moving into August House and making it their own. With a fascinating history in both the art world and real estate, August House is a sought after artist community in the city, with its gritty, stimulating surrounds that keep artists and visitors alike engaged with the urban vibes of Johannesburg’s inner world. The artists in August House, work across mediums and disciplines and are a mixture of well-known and emerging artists. With space for more than 50 artists, August House accommodates one of the largest contemporary African fine art communities in South Africa.

August House Partially-funded Residency 2022
META foundation is calling for artists, creatives, or collectives looking to take up studio space in one of the largest buildings in South Africa, August House Studios, also known as the artists’ playground. The Partially-funded Residency Program is a 3-month program wherein the participant would be located at End Street Studios located on the 2nd floor of August House. We have 3 studios that we offer on rotation for residencies within the End Street studio space. Of course, there is a booking schedule for these and as such, it depends on when the artist wants to come.

The residency period is 3 months long. The residency apartment will be available after 30 April 2022. Should applicants choose to come before this time, they may have to find alternative accommodations.
•   The residency provides for a studio space and furnished accommodation within August House.
•   The residency does NOT provide for transport, living, medical or material costs.
•   There is uncapped internet in the building.
•   A parking space will be provided.
•   The artist is expected to contribute to the cost of the program, albeit a substantially reduced amount from renting space in August House.
• A deposit is required 2 months in advance of attending or unless negotiated with the META foundation
Director.
•   During the residency, the artists are welcome to participate in any activities or events taking place at August House.

The artist is provided with their own set of keys and is free to come and go as they see fit.

Outcome

The residency artist is welcome to join any activities that are taking place at the time of their stay at August House such as Open studios / Exhibitions or other events. Should the artist wish to host discussions, an open studio or an exhibition there will be an additional charge levied for these.
