The program fee is 1850€ per month / person, ask for the price for couple / family / working group and for discount for a longer stay. Malakta will provide residents with a detailed letter of confirmation to assist with funding opportunities in the artist’s home country.

Application guidelines:

Artists and professionals are selected on the basis of applications ongoing. The selection is made by an appointed panel consisting of 3-6 professionals within the creative industries. At selection, special attention is given to the applicant’s professional experience and the proposed work plan at Malakta.
The seasons in west Finland are very clearly defined, summer is warm and bright with sun staying up almost for 24 hours, winter is dark and snowy. It is easy and comfortable to work indoors or outdoors all year.

The Artist in Residency Program Malakta AiR is accepting proposals for 1-3 month residencies from Visual Artists, Dancers, Writers, Filmmakers and Photographers. We welcome all the artistic and creative fields as a part of our community and there is also a possibility to apply for a longer stay and as a family or an artistic group.

Malakta’s creative residency program, the AiR with an annual theme will be focused on exploring community art. Part of the residency program there is a personal mentorship included that is given by the local artists to support the residents personal creative process and work as a part of the community at Malakta. Residents are expected to participate in exploring or creating community art in some capacity during their stay as a part of the local community. This can be done in a creative way, by offering an artist talk, creating an event hosted by the artist, online or by site, social media updates, artworks, show, video, sound or a workshop. A variation of different events and some creative intensive courses are a part of our living community too.

Malakta AiR offers three fully furnished apartments, all located as a part of a former dairy where the grounds and traditional wooden buildings hold a creative art center with studios, a mini-cinema, darkroom, sound studio, sauna and a variation of different shared creative spaces to use. One apartment is located as a part of the art center, with two bedrooms and a private kitchen, bathroom and access to extensive facilities in a converted historic building. One apartment is located next to the HealIn where you can find a peaceful space for yoga, meditation or dance. In this apartment there are two private bedrooms, a shared kitchen and bathroom and access to the yoga studio. We also have a family friendly apartment that is suitable for private living during your stay at the residency.

Studio Information

24 Hour access to workspace and tools and equipment suitable for painters, illustrators and sculptors.
Photographic Darkroom comprising of two colour head enlargers (35mm to 4x5 format) and a Jobo ATL-3 .
Film Processor (can process Colour Negative and Slide from 35mm to 4x5 format). Residents are expected to provide their own chemistry and paper.
Foundry with foundry oven, sand and manual tools.
Collaboration and networking opportunities through the extensive Malakta network and local community.
Access to natural materials and van (upon negotiation) for transport.
Use of Canon 5d mk3 with lenses and equipment upon negotiation.
Performance, dance and yoga space with wooden floor.

Location

Malakta is based in Malax, twenty minutes drive from Vaasa, Western Finland. Located in serene countryside, Malakta is unique in that it is a thriving centre of creativity in a rural environment.
