Maison Saint Joseph
Maison Saint Joseph
Maison Saint-Joseph (msj) is a transdisciplinary art residency housed in a classified Historic Monument in Crépy-en-Valois, France, a 17th-century family home, ~ 35 minutes by train from Paris Nord train station.
Since 2022, msj has offered time and space for the kind of work the world interrupts. Open to all art forms, visual arts, writing, performance, music, architecture, film, it welcomes artists, authors, designers, researchers, and performers for residencies of 1 week to 2 months, individual or collective.
msj is run almost entirely by volunteers. Every residency is made possible by hundreds of hours of unpaid work and in-kind support from a transdisciplinary community that believes creation matters. Residents have access to accommodation within the house, shared workspaces, a wood workshop, research library, technical mentoring, and an international artist network spanning France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Tunisia, Morocco, India and beyond.
Msj offers residencies of 1 week to 2 months, open to all disciplines, visual arts, writing, performance, music, architecture, film, and beyond. Residencies are individual or collective, with two formats: a full residency (accommodation and all services included) and a local residency for artists based nearby, with access to workspaces and mentoring without overnight stay.
The programme is built around slow, uninterrupted creation. Residents are invited to develop an existing project or initiate new work, in dialogue with the house, its history, and a transdisciplinary community of practitioners. Each season is structured around a thematic open call. The 2026–2027 season, Roots & Routes, invites artists to explore the space between belonging and movement, memory and creation.
Beyond studio time, the programme includes workshops, public events, and a sortie de résidence, an end-of-residency presentation open to the public and the local community.
At the end of their stay, residents present their work through a sortie de résidence, an open presentation to the public and the local community, taking the form of an exhibition, performance, reading, screening, or conversation depending on the work developed. msj documents each residency through a dossier de sortie de résidence. Residents are encouraged to maintain an ongoing relationship with msj as part of a growing alumni network and as potential contributors to future programmes and workshops.
msj offers two accommodation options within the property. The Manor (Maison Saint-Joseph) includes private rooms with double bed and private bathroom, and a shared loft apartment under the roof with kitchen, bathroom, and living area. La Petite Maison offers shared and private rooms with shared bathroom, kitchen, and living space. All accommodation is within the same walls where residents live and create.
Residents have access to shared studios, a wood workshop with mentoring on request, a research library, gardens, and contemplative spaces.
Technical mentoring available in: Grasshopper, Rhino, Ableton, TouchDesigner, ComfyUI, Premiere, script doctoring, and installation support. Mentoring is provided by msj's network of practitioners.
