  • Rent: $700 for two weeks or $1000 for one month (the rent includes utilities).
  • Transportation, materials, food, and additional expenses. Oracle is in a rural area so the resident will need a vehicle.

Art residency at the Lazy Seven Studio will provide the artist with opportunities to live and work in an inspiring, beautiful, high-desert landscape and discover the vibrant art community within Oracle, Arizona. During the residency, the artist will have the time to reflect and explore new ideas, and the studio space to experiment with various media and release his/her creativity into new work or put new life into a project already started. Residencies are usually a month long but can be as short as two weeks depending on the resident’s needs and availability. The Lazy Seven Studio is located on an acre of land that is owned by the artist, Lewis Schnellmann. The property includes the main house, a large studio, the art resident's apartment and a separate smaller studio. Hiking/biking trails are within walking distance as is Rancho Linda Vista, an artist community.

Outcome

Personal artistic growth. Depending on availability, a gallery space may be available to display 2 or 3-dimensional work.
A space for poets and writers to offer readings is also available.

Studio Information

Studio spaces are included in the art residency. The spacious main studio is 800 square feet and includes areas for printmaking, drawing, and painting. This studio is connected to the main house and the residence apartment. each living space has its own private entrance into the main studio. There is also a separate 320 square foot ceramic studio. The studios feature a print press and kilns. The studios will be shared with Lewis and an apprenticeship may also be available.

Accommodation Information

The Living Space is a one-bedroom air-conditioned apartment situated on one acre with views of the Catalina Mountains to the north and the Picacho Mountains to the west. The apartment is comfortably furnished with a fully equipped kitchen, stove/oven, and refrigerator. All bedroom linens and towels are provided and there is access to the shared washer and dryer. There is internet access and a large-screen TV with streaming Netflix. The apartment is attached to the main studio with a private entrance. Lewis lives in the main house attached to the other side of the main studio. The entire apartment is private. The brick patio with a bubbling fountain offers peaceful respite and opportunities for bird watching, and the yard offers various native plants and afternoon or evening recreation on the bocce ball court. The patio and yard are shared spaces. Your visit will be enhanced by the dark skies that make for spectacular viewing of the stars-including the Milky Way, and the expansive, western skies provide beautiful sunsets. Nature abounds in Oracle and miles of hiking/walking/bicycling trails are within walking distance of the apartment.

Technical Information

Oracle is in a rural area so the resident will need a vehicle. Oracle has a small market and convenience store, and the nearest grocery store is 17 miles away.

Internet access is available with limited internet speed. Smoking is not permitted in the studios or apartments.

Location

The town of Oracle is an active artist community which hosts numerous art events at various venues including Rancho Linda Vista Artist Community and Ranch Gallery; Triangle L Sculpture Path, Adobe Barn Gallery, and Gift Shop; and Oracle Center for the Arts. Musical events occur throughout the year and include quality piano and other musical programs at the Oracle Piano Society. In addition to the hiking trails within walking distance from the apartment, the Oracle State Park has miles of trails and the historic Kannally Ranch House to tour. The park is a designated Dark Sky Park and hosts Star Parties for viewing of the stars. In addition, Mount Lemmon, the highest peak in the Santa Catalina Mountains, has skiing available weather permitting in the winter months. The slope is visible from the artist's apartment. There is much to do in Oracle and by no means does this include all that is available.
