L.a. Studio
The residency is a newly formed, family- and artist-run home for the arts and artist residency, operating out of a renovated Catholic school building in Patton, PA, an old timbering, clay works, and coal mining town of ~1500 people in the Appalachian mountains. In addition to the ART-14 residency program, the aim is to provide creative and artistic opportunities for the local community through classes, markets, and other events.
The residency provides local and visiting ART-14 resident artists with a space to concentrate on projects or explore their practice in a comfortable, collaborative, and creative space, while the local community simultaneously benefits from the activity at L.a. Studio.
The hope is that artists will have the opportunity to explore or expand their practices freely, and therefore don't have any requirements in terms of deliverables/production. Often, the participating artists have opted to participate in presentations at the conclusion of their stay discussing their progress, which are attended by the staff and artists/members from the local community.
Two large, open-concept and modular studio spaces are located on the primary floor of L.a. Studio. One side is equipped with ceramics equipment (3 throwing wheels, kiln, glazing/finishing spaces, counter space), stained glass equipment, and 3D printing/laser engraving, and the other side is equipped with easels/desk spaces separated by large, mobile partitions (approx. 6x8') finished with cork for pin-ups. There is a woodshop in the basement of the building. They are looking to install a dark room in the basement for film development, and hoping to expand the textile and screen printing equipment soon.
Artists all have their own bedrooms, distributed between two furnished apartments on the floor above the main studio spaces. Each apartment has a full bath and fully equipped kitchen. Artists provide their own food, and there are several restaurants, bars, and groceries within walking distance of L.a. Studio. Anyone hoping to accompany resident artists should also complete an application, as they expect anyone staying with them to influence, contribute to, and commit themselves to the creative environment the organisers hope to curate as part of the ART14 Residency. Per responsibility to create a comfortable living arrangement for all guests and artists accessing shared facilities, additional occupants looking to share any of the suite bedrooms will incur a 50% additional charge per extra person. The residency is unfortunately not ADA accessible, and pets are not allowed.
