Description

A L T O exists as a container for self-directed artists who wish to nurture their work through embracing the particularities of Alto Paraiso, surrounded by abundant raw nature, jungle & fauna and a powerful changing landscape which can inform or set new production of work within an evident context of the connection with the land and sustainability.

Outcome

Additionally, to being provided with a workspace, possibilities exist to create land art and/or objects around the house and surroundings. In your application, you will be asked to define a project or goal for your residency and summarise your professional achievements. The land conceptually and materially provides a considerable amount of space within which to produce outside of a studio environment. We recommend when possible integration of the land into the work, yet this is not a requirement.

Studio Information

Residents have the possibility of working within a studio set–up if they wish or to work more privately from their own room or other spaces, which they can provide.

They have a 9-metre diameter open round 3.5m tall ceiling shared bamboo temple which can be used as a studio space. It has a great roof and open sides integrated with beautiful wild gardens. They have an art studio (Frida Studio) with a terrace to the jungle and an open atelier and artists will get to choose where they would like to work once they arrive.

Accommodation Information

They have various possibilities of rooms to choose from depending on availability, some closer to raw jungle nature than others. From unique treehouses to private cabins for two, to shared group or family rooms of 7.

Technical Information

In the region, they have a high quantity of quartz crystals, red earth, wood, bamboo and other natural materials which can be used for working. Some of it grows on the land others have to be purchased. We have basic tools for art and a full range of tools for the garden and some good electrical wood-cutting machine equipment for experienced users. There is also a great number of palm trees and other woods that you can look into as materials with potential.

If residents are interested in adding an extra activity to their stay, they can partake in helping with the land’s sustainability. In the back gardens, there are forests where they are currently cultivating the Shiitake mushrooms which they sell at the local organic market, so residents will get a chance to watch them at work and learn about this fascinating process, as well as taste the final product prepared in many different delicious recipes.

There is also a series of gardens in which they have various vegetable and agro-forestry patches, composting piles and recycling stations in which residents can help out if they desire to do so to connect with the land further.

Location

Viewed as one of the most exciting and significant eco-spiritual destinations worldwide, Alto Paraíso de Goiás, is situated in the heart of Brazil, a 2.5hr drive from the capital city Brasília. The nearest airport is Brasilia from where we can arrange a car to pick you up and bring you to Alto Paraiso (350R$). They will pick you up from the Cultural Ecocentre Eco Nois in town and bring you to the residency.

A biodiversity hotspot blessed with breathtaking natural landscapes hosting an endless collection of pristine waterfalls, each one more beautiful than the next.

At 1700m Alto Paraíso is the highest city of Goiás and bears a pleasant tropical mountain climate. Built on the world’s largest crystal bank Alto intersects Latitude 14 which also crosses the legendary Machu Picchu. This esoteric town has always attracted nature lovers, adventurers, travellers, artists, mystics, healers and seekers, musicians, bird-watchers and conservationists.
