There are no grants connected to the Klaustrid AiR.
They gladly assist artists applying for funding by providing a letter of support. Transport to and from the airport in Egilisstaðir and into town for supplies is provided if needed.

The resident does not pay for his stay at Klaustrið except for an unreturnable confirmation fee of 10.000 ISK which shall be paid according to an invoice when placement has been granted and scheduled. That is the only direct cost to Gunnar Gunnarsson Institute. AiR guest is responsible for their own travel cost.
AiR guest needs to budget in own supply costs – food and everything that has to do with the project
AiR guest is responsible for all extra costs.

Application guidelines:

There is an OPEN CALL for applications. Open to everyone who has arts, literature, music, human or natural science as a profession or discipline. Writers, composers, artists, musicians, and scholars are all eligible to apply for 3-6 weeks of residency in Klaustrid. The application deadline is 15th June for the following calendar year. The board of Gunnar Gunnarsson Institute evaluates all applications and by September applicants are informed about their decision.

Any other information or material the artist believes supports the application is accepted.
Projects concerning Gunnar Gunnarsson, his life and his works, have priority just as any project concerning East Iceland, its nature, and culture.

Description

Skriðuklaustur is a cultural centre run by Gunnarsstofnun, an institution dedicated to the memory of the writer Gunnar Gunnarsson. The main goal of Gunnarsstofnun is to preserve the memory of the author Gunnar Gunnarsson and to bring his work to the attention of new generations of readers. Skriðuklaustur contains a museum on the author, and hosts various cultural events and exhibitions with a bearing on his work, on the medieval monastery located on the premises or Icelandic history and nature. Gunnarsstofnun also maintains a guest apartment for artists or scholars, as well as a restaurant.
The museum and cafe at Skriðuklaustur are open daily during summer, spring, and fall.

The program's objectives at AiR Klaustrid are to give the residents a place to stay in peace and work on specific projects in a creative atmosphere. It is not a colony of artists and the location of Skriduklaustur is away from towns and crowds giving the selected a quiet environment to work and concentrate on their projects. The residency program is open all year.

Accommodation Information

The living/working facilities consist of a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and a living room with a big desk for working. Wi-Fi internet connection and a piano in place. The main workspace area is part of the living room in the apartment. It has an adjustable standing desk, internet, and access to a printer in the staff offices downstairs. Extra monitor, mouse, and keyboard are in place. The apartment is only for one person or a couple at a time.

The Apartment is located on the 2nd floor of the mansion at Skriðuklaustur. The house is unique, designed by the German architect Fritz Höger and built during one summer in 1939. The space was originally an apartment for the writer's son, Gunnar Jr., and his family.

Studio Information

The main workspace is part of the living room. Adjustments can be made if known in advance if any other space is needed because of size or the type of work. That includes a sheltered workspace for bigger and possibly messy projects.
