Application guidelines:

KAB artists in residence programmes are only paid schemes for accommodation, and curatorial projects which depends on artists requirement. It is basically one month stay to three months stay in the same accommodation, but they can accept shorter period (1 to 7 days). The details of application and programme schemes are provided through a personal contact on KABlibresidency(at)gmail.com. If you have references or recommendation from people who know the institution or visited this community, it would be an advantage.
All artists have to apply for the residency programmes at least two months in advance, and make clear their plans for staying in this community and what kind of support they need.

Description

KAB Library and Residency in Tokyo is founded and organized by an independent curator; Emiko Kato. It was officially open on 26th Jan 2022, although it was temporarily closed due to Covid-19 soon after. Now they are slowly starting again to run the programmes such as the exhibitions, workshops, artists talk, book market, book readings, AiR project etc. They focus on mainly working on community projects with both local and international artists, and even though some well being projects organise to connect disabled people and artists.
 

Outcome

Past Programmes:
-KAB Art Book Camp: the six independent artists who made original creative workshops to participants who stayed to attend their online workshop at KAB from 12th Sep. to 11th Oct. 2020, in conjunction with Sumida Expo 2020.
-KAB Art Exhibition: Maze of Art Book which is the photography exhibition of the six Chinese art students of Tokyo Zokei University 26th - 28th February 2021.
-KAB Art Book Making is led by Katsuhito Nakazato, a professor at Zokei University. 12 participants attend to create the photo book workshop from 1th Aug. to 11th Oct. 2021 (5 times). Resulting book exhibition by the participants between 19th to 23rd Sep 2021.
-KAB Art Book Exhibition by Katsuhito Nakazato as a part of Sumida Expo2021 on 1st to 30th Oct.2021.
-KAB Art Exhibition; Solo Photography Exhibition “To Row the Wind” by Takao Hashimoto, the three venues surrounding the town; Satellite Kitchen, Off Coffee and KAB Library and Residency on 29th April to 15 May 2022.

Additionally, while the renovation has been constructed (6months between July 2019 to January 2020), the Austrian artist: Verina Fader has stayed regularly around October and November since 2019 in the town. She has made the instant installation works inspired by this conversion styled house as a response to her first residency. And then, she invited Korean researcher and curator to make book event in Sumida with Emiko Kato in 2024.

Accommodation Information

It is located in the East End of Tokyo as Kyojima in Sumida Ward. There is the North Easter district in Tokyo called Shitamachi means the downtown area has many one-story terraced wooden houses which are a very common residency style for living indigent people in Tokyo since the Edo era (17 century). Of course, the architectural style is slightly modernized with a detached flushing toilet in each room, and there is no bathing (KAB has a shower). Therefore, the public bath is very commonly used for the habitats until the end of the 20th Century. Since the Skytree has erected, the tallest TV tower in Tokyo has been set up in the town in 2012 (after the enormous disaster of the Tohoku Earthquakes in 2011), the town has been remodeling into the high-rise houses and fireproof city planning instead of demolishing old types of houses.

Studio Information

KAB; the old typed wooden terraced house since the 1940s is renovated into a new type of residency apartment with a lot of bookshelves covert into a Library and Residency was designed and constructed by a few artists; mainly Takayoshi Kitagawa, Guy Hirose, and Tadayuki Tahara. The big size of U-shaped bookshelf has been occupied in the middle of the room which old furniture assembly integrated into the shelves from the private house such as the cupboard and the chest of Kimono drawers made of paulownia wood. It becomes a symbolic icon of the house.
KAB annex has opened in October 2024 the next door of KAB Library and Residency.It is a studio flat for the Artists in Residence programme. Two bed rooms, a dining kitchen, and separated toilet, bathroom, and work space as two floors furnished house.
There is study room for desk work, drawing, paintings, embroidery, internet works for design, etc.
If you are musicians or audio creators using instruments, you can not play in the room, but we offer to use the practice room in the neighborhood.

Technical Information

Free Wifi.
There are 3D printer, large colour printer (poster size), wood workshop, a sewing machine for fabric workshop, silk screen studio at the neighbours. Thy can ask other technical professionals to support your project, although all technical supports are only paid scheme, if you request.
