Description

Jambatan Art Space is an independent, artist-led organisation founded in Copenhagen in 2008 and now operating between Malaysia and international contexts. It develops exhibitions, residencies, festivals, research and collaborative projects that create connections between artists, places and communities. Jambatan is the organisational platform behind Stateless Mind, Stateless House and the Stateless Mind Pavilion, with an emphasis on artistic experimentation, intercultural exchange and independent practice.

Stateless House Artist Residency is an independent, artist-led residency based in Langkawi, Malaysia, and developed under Stateless Mind. Located in a quiet rural setting surrounded by paddy fields, buffaloes, tropical vegetation and abundant birdlife, Stateless House is also close to the beaches of Cenang and Pantai Tengah.

The residency provides artists, writers, curators, researchers and interdisciplinary practitioners with time and space for research, experimentation, writing and artistic development. Rather than focusing on the production of finished work, it values intercultural dialogue, artistic encounters, shared and lived experiences.

Residents work independently and at their own pace while engaging with Langkawi through its landscape, communities and cultural environment. Field visits and introductions to local artists, craftspeople, communities and cultural spaces can be arranged according to individual interests.

Outcome

There is no required artistic outcome. The residency focuses on process, research, experimentation and artistic development rather than the production of a finished work. Residents may use their time for developing new ideas, writing, field research, experimentation or preliminary research for longer-term projects.

Accommodation Information

Stateless House accommodates a maximum of two resident practitioners at a time, each with a private bedroom. Residents have access to two studio/work spaces and share a kitchen, bathroom and common living areas. Wi-Fi and utilities are included.

When more than two practitioners are participating at the same time, additional residents may arrange accommodation nearby while using Stateless House as their working and meeting base. Alternative accommodation can also be discussed for residents who prefer to stay independently.

The kitchen is available for residents to prepare their own meals. Meals are not included.

Stateless House is located in a quiet rural area surrounded by paddy fields and tropical vegetation, approximately 20 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by motorcycle from Cenang Beach.

Studio Information

Residents have access to several flexible working areas at Stateless House, including two indoor studios, one outdoor studio, a balcony and the garden, which can also be used as an outdoor working space. These spaces can accommodate research, writing, drawing, small-scale production and interdisciplinary practice.

The surrounding landscape and communities of Langkawi can also become part of the working environment, depending on each resident’s practice and research interests.

Technical Information

Stateless House provides Wi-Fi, electricity, basic working furniture and flexible indoor and outdoor working spaces. The residency is particularly suitable for research, writing, drawing, installation development, small-scale making and experimental or site-responsive practices.

Stateless House does not operate as a fully equipped technical production facility. Residents requiring specialised tools, audiovisual equipment or other technical facilities should discuss their requirements in advance. Additional equipment and materials can be sourced or rented locally where possible.
