Description

Itinera Arte is an independent contemporary art platform based in downtown Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Its activities include artistic education, exhibitions, public programs, international exchanges, cultural trips, and artist residency programs. Itinera Arte works as a space for artistic research, critical reflection, and exchange between artists, curators, researchers, students, and cultural professionals.

Itinera Arte International Artist Residency Program is a contemporary art residency based in Rio de Janeiro, open to Brazilian and international artists. The program supports the development of artistic research through studio practice, weekly curatorial guidance, portfolio reviews, critical follow-up, conversations with invited artists and curators, visits to studios, galleries, exhibitions and cultural institutions, and a final collective exhibition/open studio.

The residency is conceived as a space of exchange between artists, curators, and the local art scene, encouraging experimentation, dialogue, and the development of new artistic processes in relation to the cultural, historical, and urban context of Rio de Janeiro.

Outcome

The residency culminates in a collective exhibition and open studio presenting works and processes developed during the program. Depending on each artist’s practice and the program schedule, additional outcomes may include public talks, presentations, workshops, or other forms of public sharing, defined in dialogue with the curatorial team.

Accommodation Information

Accommodation is not provided directly by Itinera Arte. However, Itinera Arte provides concrete guidance and practical support to help residents find suitable accommodation options, including information about neighborhoods, transportation, local costs and possible short-term rental options.

The residency team remains available to assist residents before and during their stay with practical orientation regarding the city.

Studio Information

Each resident has access to a studio space within Itinera Arte’s facilities in downtown Rio de Janeiro. Studios are approximately 25 m² and may be individual or shared, depending on the selected fee category and availability.

The studios are bright workspaces suitable for drawing, painting, small-scale sculpture, installation studies, writing, research and interdisciplinary or experimental practices. Each studio includes a work table and basic working infrastructure.

The workspace is located close to the curatorial and administrative team, encouraging regular dialogue, informal studio visits and exchange between residents.

Technical Information

Itinera Arte provides basic studio infrastructure, work tables, curatorial meeting space, exhibition/open studio space and access to shared program facilities. Artists are responsible for bringing or acquiring the specific materials, tools and technical resources required for their projects.

The program is best suited for artists whose projects can be developed through studio-based research, drawing, painting, writing, small-scale object production, photography, video, sound research, performance, installation studies and other experimental or interdisciplinary processes that do not require heavy industrial equipment.
