Deadline passed for 2013-2014 residencies

IslandWood Artist-in-Residence selections are based on many factors, such as prior teaching experience, relevance of the workshop material to IslandWood, and whether the medium will balance well with what we already offer with our current roster of artists. Decisions are made in September, and Artists-In-Residence are scheduled for the School Overnight Program from early November through late May.

The Artist-in-Residence program brings in "teaching artists" to work with the students, teachers and IslandWood staff during our School Overnight Program. These artists are locally, nationally and internationally known and represent various disciplines, media, cultures, experience and age.

By looking at processes, medium and technique, artists offer innovative ways to expand student understanding and relationship with both natural systems and cultural communities, providing them with the language and models to explore and express such connections.

Technical Information

Artists arrive on Monday and often offer a professional development session for our instructors that afternoon.  The following two days are spent in 90 - 150 minute workshops with groups of 10-12 4th - 6th grade students. In the months prior the residency, the IslandWood Arts Coordinator works closely with the artist to develop the integration of the artist's work with the project-based curriculum at IslandWood.

Located on Bainbridge Island near Seattle in Washington State, IslandWood is a 255-acre outdoor learning center. It is reachable via a 35-minute ferry ride from the downtown Seattle ferry dock.
