Description

INSTITUTO is a focal point for different forms of cultural expression, located in the heart of Porto. The team’s interests and backgrounds have given rise to a programme that diverges from the field of architecture to encompass the visual and spatial arts, critical thinking and multidisciplinary collaborations. They seek to encourage the creation and exploration of new contemporary discourses through interdisciplinarity, the informality of the space and the will to tackle burning issues in today’s society.

INSTITUTO hosts residencies for artists, architects and researchers who are looking for an opportunity to live and work in Porto for a period of up to 3 months. They accept self-funded spontaneous applications, and they also provide support with applications for grants suggested by candidates. Applicants are asked to fill the application form, including a bio/CV and a synopsis of the project to be developed during residency stay. The organisers particularly welcome proposals related to architecture, critical spatial practices, urban culture and postcolonial subjects, with a tangible public and social impact.

Outcome

The residency includes a presentation of the work in the residencies' venue at a public event.

Studio Information

Private Studio (17.5m²) - Bright room with high ceiling, equipped with chairs/lamp/tables, original shelf and a sofa-bed. Direct link to the bedroom and project room.

Accommodation Information

The original building was designed in the 1950s by renowned architect and engineer Júlio de Brito, who was also responsible for significant projects in the vicinity. The site was initially occupied by the pharmaceutical warehouses of the Instituto Pasteur, comprising a unique collection of small industrial premises in addition to two annexes and a spacious courtyard. The original spatial arrangement was kept, in a variety of rooms with different characteristics: we have a hall and courtyard venue; workrooms for small teams; a studio suitable for art and research residencies, and a room for exhibitions, talks, photo shoots and workshops.

A residency space for artistic and research residencies of short or medium duration. Independent access from the courtyard. Fully equipped kitchen, toilet, shower, washing machine, private studio with sofa bed and room with double bed.
