Application guidelines:

The women-identified people who come to Hedgebrook are writing in the following genres (non-fiction, fiction, poetry, screenwriting/tv writing, playwriting, songwriting), and are ages 18+, all ethnicities, backgrounds and levels of writing experience.

The application and selection processes occur twice a year. The first application cycle is open mid-February to mid-March, for residencies taking place the following February-June. The second application cycle is open mid-August to mid-September, for residencies taking place the following July-October. Through a completely anonymous, three-round process, approximately 80 writers are invited for residencies of two weeks to four weeks. The residency season runs from early February to early November.

Description

Hedgebrook exists to strengthen the voices of women-identified writers of ages 18+ and from diverse backgrounds by providing a place where they can find connections with one another and with the earth, and the words to build community in the world.

Accommodation Information

6 fully furnished cottages, including efficiency kitchen, bathroom, desk, sleeping loft. Private showers and laundry available in the shared bathhouse.

Studio Information

The main floor of the writers cottage has a work area with ample desk space, a sitting area with window seat looking out into the woods, and a comfortable armchair. Bookshelves have space for the writer’s personal library.

Technical Information

Internet connection and printer provided in common area (shared). Writers should bring their own computer.

Location

The residency is located on forty-eight acres of farm and woodlands on Whidbey Island in Washington State.
