At the time of its opening in 1999 as a museum dedicated to Asian modern and contemporary art, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum has not only provided open access to its public collections starting since the 1970s but also invited artists or researchers from Asian countries and regions and conducted various art exchange programs to newly function as an “interactive art museum.”

Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (hereinafter referred to as FAAM) invites local and international artists, including but not limited to those from Asian regions, for a certain period, to provide them with opportunities to create and present their artworks in Fukuoka, so that they encourage and inspire each other to achieve their full potential globally from Fukuoka city. Through conducting various artistic exchange programs with local citizens, it hopes to nurture a deeper understanding of Asian contemporary art and cultures and to foster a diverse range of local cultures. Furthermore, FAAM aims to become an interactive platform for Asian art, through efforts such as building an international human and organizational network.

Outcome

1) Art-making
Artists should utilize their working environment in Fukuoka for their art making and projects, to present them in public. FAAM will provide support for art-making as well as collaborations with local professionals in the art field and universities, etc.
2) Art exchange program
Artists should conduct workshop(s) and artist talk(s), etc. (each event for two times in principle) for the people of Fukuoka, including children and general participants.
3) Exhibition
Artworks or results of activities during the residency will be presented at the residency artist’s exhibition or other events.
FAAM will actively support and publicize the invited artists’ activities during the residency.

Accommodation facilities such as a short-stay apartment in Fukuoka City designated by FAAM.
