Description

Footnote is an independent artist-run studio and art publishing initiative in Belgrade, Serbia. It is a space dedicated to experimentation, research and production in the field of visual arts and publishing. Their focus is on different and informal educational formats and collaborations between individual art workers, artist collectives and cultural institutions. Footnote offers a space and support for development of projects related to photography, moving image, visual essays, books, experimental publishing, installation and mixed-media. The facilitators at Footnote Centre have a combined experience in teaching at international art institutions and are committed to pursuing new models for creative studies based on critical insights, in-depth research and a genuine curiosity about the working of ideas, words and images.

Open call
The artist residency is aimed at multimedia practitioners at any stage of their career who want to spend a period of time living and working in Belgrade, Serbia. The Centre offers a calm place to live and work and a professional support in different areas of visual arts. The Centre has an in-house gallery, where the results of the residency research can be displayed, presented and discussed in various formats (exhibitions, talks, classes). Alternatively, they are able to provide connections to other art centres and galleries in Belgrade.

Outcome

Artists are free to decide on the outcome of their research. They can apply with a specific project to be realized over the course of the residency or continue their ongoing research. We encourage the residents to present their work in any format they find suitable (artist talk, exhibition, lecture) but it is not mandatory.

Studio Information

The house provides a space to work, learn, contemplate, and experiment. At residents’ disposal are desk spaces and a spacious area for presentations, temporary exhibitions or screenings. The house is covered with a fast Wi-Fi, and has all the essential facilities.

Accommodation Information

For the duration of the residency artists live and work in the house. Guests are offered a large private room with a balcony, a private toilet and a shared kitchen.

Technical Information

The studio is equipped with digital printing facilities, bookbinding tools, as well as a variety of analogue and digital cameras and a studio lighting equipment. We are working towards expanding our production capacities towards adapting the basement and attic spaces into image and printing labs.

Location

The studio is located in the heart of Belgrade, within the historical district of Dorćol, near Kalemegdan fortress. The house in Strahinjića Bana 12 dates back to the early 30’s and represents an authentic example of the early modernist civic architecture in the kingdom of Yugoslavia. It is a one-story building, composed of a grand salon used as a gallery and a lecture-space, four rooms including two guest rooms, a balcony, basement (ex wine cellar) and a garden. Hidden behind a socialist-style building from the 50’s, it is a perfectly preserved fragment of the past, with original composite structure and architectural features from the period.
