Etty Hillesum Huis Residency Program
Etty Hillesum Huis Residency Program
The Etty Hillesum Huis welcomes writers and artists to a residency programme centred on reflection, research and creative practice. Residents are expected to engage with Etty Hillesum’s writings and thought, exploring connections with their own work. The studio is available to rent on a monthly basis at an affordable rate, as a workspace only; accommodation is not included. The Huis offers research assistance and remote curatorial mentorship, alongside opportunities to discuss temporary exhibitions and share residents’ work through its programme (workshops, lectures, performances...) and communication channels.

The studio offers a large worktable, wall space for developing and displaying work, a bookshelf and a sofa. Coffee and tea are provided, and a kitchenette is available. Middelburg, the historic capital of Zeeland in the southwestern Netherlands, combines a rich cultural heritage with proximity to the region’s coastal landscapes and open horizons. It offers an inspiring setting for creative work and reflection. Here, the Etty Hillesum Huis, birthplace of the writer Etty Hillesum, provides a space for dialogue, remembrance and encounters with art and literature. A studio is available to rent for writers and artists seeking time and space to develop their work in this meaningful setting.

The Etty Hillesum Huis is an institute for education, research, arts and culture, located in the birthplace of the Jewish writer Etty Hillesum in Middelburg, the Netherlands. Open to the public since 2022, the Huis is dedicated to sharing her writings and thought and exploring their relevance today.
Our initial programme focused on education, followed by the further development of research activities in collaboration with the Etty Hillesum Research Centre (EHOC). We are now expanding our arts and cultural programme, with residencies providing space for writers and artists to engage with Hillesum’s legacy through contemporary creative practice. Through research, artistic exchange and public activities, we aim to connect her work with new perspectives and audiences.
