Down the Lane Artist Residency
Down the Lane Artist Residency is a one-month residency for one artist, based at Down the Lane Studios in Collingwood, Melbourne. It is run by Down the Lane Studios and Culture Focus and is open to artists worldwide, in any discipline. The artist receives return airfare, accommodation, a private studio of about 6 x 6 metres, a workshop, a A$500 production budget, introductions to Melbourne artists, curators and galleries, an open studio to show the work, and a visa support letter. Applications are made online with one PDF containing images of work, a short bio, a CV and a project plan. A panel of artists, curators and arts professionals assesses a shortlist.
There is a non-refundable application fee of A$50, which helps cover the artist's flights, insurance and running costs. The first residency takes place in March 2027, applications close on 20 December 2026, and all applicants are notified by 20 January 2027. The programme is planned to run every year.
The residency includes an open studio, where the artist shows the work made during the month.
Accommodation in Melbourne is provided for the artist for the full month of the residency at no cost. Return airfare is also included.

Collingwood is an inner-city Melbourne suburb, about 3 km north-east of the CBD. The studio is on Johnston Street, a short walk from Collingwood and Victoria Park stations and served by trams and buses. The neighbourhood has many galleries, studios, cafes and art supply shops, and Fitzroy and Abbotsford are within walking distance. Melbourne Airport is about 40 minutes away by car.
