Craigardan
Craigardan is a nonprofit arts organization and educational working farm that leverages collective creativity for social good. They bring people together for place-based and interdisciplinary learning, providing creative residencies, courses, and events that span diverse artistic and knowledge disciplines in order to foster curiosity, inquiry, and collaboration.
Craigardan supports ceramic, literary, visual, and performance artists, as well as farmers, chefs, activists, scholars, and researchers from the Adirondack region and around the world. They support applicants at any stage of their career, working in a variety of media, and offer flexible residency terms including no: specific degree requirements; set duration for residencies; specific project proposals; or deliverables. All residencies are designed to offer uninterrupted time for artists to work independently without instruction or distraction while encouraging interdisciplinary exchange. They believe in providing equitable opportunities for all people and highly encourage applications from Indigenous Peoples, people of colour, people who identify as LGBTQIA+, and people with disabilities, as well as all who are historically underserved, under-resourced, and underrepresented.
Regardless of the medium, they encourage applications from artists seeking time and space to pursue independent projects; create new work; complete a project; conduct research; find inspiration; write; think; sketch; cook; teach - this time is for you. If you are an artist, agrarian, chef, designer, writer, teacher, researcher, medical professional, activist, or thinker seeking to establish yourself, gain new energy and perspective, push the boundaries in your field, or in need of a sabbatical - they have a creative residency for you.
All residents have a private studio space available 24/7 with basic furniture and equipment as appropriate for their work. We discuss studio requirements with each accepted applicant to best meet individual needs and assign appropriate spaces.
Residents have a private bedroom and shared living areas including a kitchen, bathroom, and laundry. Wireless internet access is available in the main areas of the campus. Basic household items including towels, linens, cleaning supplies, kitchenware and cooking equipment, are provided.
All residents receive: a weekly farm share and stocked pantry with fresh, seasonal, local food as well as coffee and tea; a fully stocked kitchen (utensils, kitchenware, and cooking equipment); shared kitchen, living, laundry and bathroom facilities; studio space appropriate to your discipline; free access to all programs (Monday Night Dinners, Crit Sessions, Applebarn Talks, hands-on farm experience and special events); and the full and ongoing support of the organization.
Craigardan now stewards 320 acres of field and forest, with a small-scale farm to provide food and hands-on experience for the community. Set within a working, educational farm, they provide creative residencies that span diverse artistic and knowledge disciplines in order to foster curiosity, inquiry, and collaboration. Located at the intersection of arts and agriculture, Craigardan leverages creative thinking for social good and systems change — with a specific focus on sustainable agriculture and food justice.
