Description
Center for art and well-being Hub Feenix was established in the premises of the historical Meltola sanatorium in 2020. The wonderful building in the middle of pine forests, 10 minutes drive from the little town of Karjaa, only 1 hour west from the capital Helsinki, has 15,000m2 full of beautiful and inspiring spaces. Hub Feenix is run by a non-profit cooperative and its purpose is to create a space where life, creativity and joy of continuous learning can flourish. Although a lot is going on in the house, the beautiful building in the middle of nature is so huge that there is always a nice quiet place to be found, to concentrate and to enjoy stillness, when you need it.
Hub Feenix Residency: The former Meltola sanitarium, with its beautiful premises, has undergone a transformation into an inspiring community center. Now the new non-profit center for creativity and well-being Hub Feenix has started an artist residency program. Hub Feenix offers a harmonious, beautiful and inspiring working environment. There you experience the stillness and beauty of nature and the possibility to deeply concentrate on your work, but in the same time you can also enjoy meeting new wonderful people. The residency has wide opportunities for collaboration and learning new skills. Hub Feenix is full of spaces where the senses delight and the spirit is lifted. Therefore, the residency period at Hub Feenix can be both artistically productive and at the same time bring new vitality, inspiration and recreation.
Outcome
There is no expected outcome of the residency. The residency coordinators, who are professional artists themselves, are available to help with possible collaborations or workshops. They expect the artists in residence to keep the common spaces in the residency wing (kitchens, bathrooms, living spaces) tidy, so that everyone can enjoy this very special time together, and to clean their bedroom and studio before leaving.
Hub Feenix is a vegetarian house, so no other food is allowed inside the building. In Hub Feenix they observe low alcohol consumption and the house is substance-free. Please find the code of conduct on their website.
Studio Information
A private bedroom, about 15m2, and a private 15m2 studio with 24-hour access in the 4th-floor artist wing of Hub Feenix. Hub Feenix, an old sanatorium, stands on a hill in the middle of pine forests, so the views from the 4th floor studio windows are wide and beautiful, overlooking the treetops. There's a lot of light, and in the summertime, the studios and bedrooms stay pleasantly cool.
It´s also possible to use the workshops of Hub Feenix (printmaking, ceramics, textiles, 3d-printing, wood and metal workshops, sound recording studio) by agreement separately, according to the workshops’ schedules and fees. Please find more information about facilities on their website.
The residency coordinators will introduce the artist to the house (which is huge!) and the possibilities Hub Feenix offers. The residency coordinators are professional artists themselves, and are also available to help with possible collaborations or workshops. The coordinators help the artists in residence to connect with local artists, and give a lot of tips about who to meet and what to see.
Accommodation Information
The artists stay in 15m2 private bedrooms and share the kitchen, bathroom and shower facilities. In addition, the building has several inviting and inspiring shared spaces, lounges and a co-working space. There is a limited amount of bedrooms with a private toilet. If you would like one, the extra cost is 50€/a month. Please mention this in your application.
Technical Information
Wooden saunas in the peaceful back garden of Hub Feenix are heated about once a week, and everybody staying in Hub Feenix is welcome to join (everyone wears swimsuits). Weekly yoga classes and guided meditation are organized in the house, which you can participate in if you wish. The house hosts various dance and music events and festivals, for example ecstatic dance evenings, in which it is possible to participate. Some are free, some have a participating fee. There are plenty of interesting places nearby to explore, such as the artist village Fiskars, the charming little town of Tammisaari and the castles of Mustio and Raasepori.
Location
Hub Feenix is located in the middle of beautiful nature. After walking less than 15 minutes through the forest and across the fields along beautiful little roads, you will reach a lake where you can go swimming in the summertime. You can go for walks, bicycle and in the wintertime it´s possible to go cross-country skiing on the forest trails. Since Hub Feenix has its own cross country riding stable, it´s also possible to go on peaceful horse riding trips on the beautiful forest paths. You don´t need to have any experience about horseback riding beforehand! In the late summer and autumn the forests around Hub Feenix are full of berries and mushrooms to pick.
