No stipend or production grant is provided. Artists are expected to cover their own travel, food, transportation, and production costs.

Description

CHINO BASE AIR is an artist residency and creative retreat located in rural Shiga, Japan, at the foot of Mt. Hiei, one of the most historically spiritual places in Japan.

Residents stay in a renovated traditional Japanese farmhouse while becoming part of a small community of artists, craftspeople, and local residents. The residency encourages research, experimentation, slow creation, and quiet retreat in a rural environment.

During the residency, residents may use Lumen Field Gallery on the first floor as a shared studio space. The gallery is a newly renovated white-walled space that preserves the original wooden beams of the traditional farmhouse architecture.

Toward the end of the residency, residents may also host an informal open studio presentation in the space.

As an optional add-on, residents may present exhibitions, talks, screenings, workshops, or events at a partner gallery in central Kyoto.

Basic interpretation and translation support are available to help residents connect with local culture and artisans.

Outcome

The residency does not require a fixed outcome.
Residents are encouraged to focus on research, experimentation, and deepening their practice.
Outcomes may include new works, research materials, exhibitions, open studios, or community-based activities, depending on each artist’s process.

Accommodation Information

Private bedrooms are provided within a renovated traditional house.
The building is not soundproof, and residents are expected to live quietly and respectfully.

Studio Information

Lumen Field Gallery on the first floor functions primarily as a shared studio space during the residency. The space may also be used for exhibitions, screenings, workshops, talks, or open studio presentations.

The optional Kyoto gallery program provides a 3-day exhibition or event opportunity at a partner gallery in central Kyoto.
