Castro
CASTRO is an experimental learning program based in Rome. It provides development opportunities and workspace to artists and researchers. It also runs learning activities and hosts a range of cultural events for and with everyone. The CASTRO Studio Program is an educational program which hosts a number of artists and researchers offering them a workspace and activities tailored to their practice.
Amongst the activities are: tutorials, group tutorials, studio visits, guided tours of Rome based on fellow research, workshops with local artisans of traditional Roman practices, and open studios.
CASTRO’s programming is articulated on 2 independent tracks: one is open to the public and the second to the artists and researchers who win the fellowships. All fellowships offer a studio, educational activities and pedagogical guidance. The studio is intended as a workplace, it is not possible to live at CASTRO. Fellows will have regular meetings with a tutor who will follow their research and regular meetings with other fellows and with the CASTRO Team. As CASTRO offers a one-to-one program, the Team members will plan the educational activities (studio visits, field trips, tutorials, group tutorials, CRITS) together with their Fellow during individual meetings.
The CASTRO team will evaluate the proposals, agreeing on the possible budget and the modalities of the event.
CASTRO offers 5 fellowships that go from the 19th of February to the 23rd of June 2024.
- The EXTENDED Fellowship is an opportunity for artists working with an interdisciplinary approach to art who intend to bring their artistic practice to Rome. An interdisciplinary approach includes, but is not limited to: socially engaged projects, performance, and site-specific projects.
- The MEDIA Fellowship is an opportunity for artists working with media that includes, but is not limited to: video, sound, publishing projects who intend to bring their artistic practice to Rome.
- The LOCAL fellowship is a unique opportunity for artists with proven ties to local institutions or to Rome in general and want to continue developing their artistic practice in Rome.
- The INTERNATIONAL Fellowship is an opportunity for international artists who want to bring their artistic practice to Rome. The Fellowship is supported by Stella Scarpellini, a patron of CASTRO, who will play an important role in the selection of the Fellowship holder, after pre-selection by the jury members.
- The EMERGENT Fellowship is an opportunity for artists who have recently completed their artistic studies, or who are at the beginning of their studio practice, and intend to develop their artistic practice in Rome.
On top of the Studio Program Fellowships this year CASTRO offers permanent opportunities. These Fellowships are not subject to specific timings and therefore have no deadline. However, they are subject to availability. The selection for this opportunity will be conducted exclusively by the CASTRO Team.
During their stay at CASTRO, fellows may suggest organising an artist’s talk/lecture/public presentation, either to present their practice or as a further research tool.
