Description

Camping town was founded as an non-profit organisation in 2011 by historian and Artist Anne Dolorès Marcélis and designed as a hosting space by architect Ewoud Saey.

At first centered on alternative housing, playing on the duality of individual tree-houses within a common living space, mixing private and public spheres, nature and urban life, outside and inside… It has since evolved into an organisation keen to support performance arts and dance, alternative living and thinking, and shared experiences between artist and non artists within a creative process.

Camping Town is not a hosting facility for tourists or a residency for travelling artists, it is an organisation that sees within alternative and temporary housing the keys towards an interesting and innovative approach to creativeness, socialising, experimenting and the sharing of experiences in an urban and professional environment.

The Camping Town, with its tree-houses “to sleep” and its studio “to create”, is a an hosting place dedicated to performance and creation, located in center of Brussels (Botanique), in between the poorest area of Belgium (St. Josse Ten Noode) and the prestigious european institutions.

The five indivual three-houses, nested in the common space, reconcilie the outside and the inside, at the same time they allow to live intimacy in a shared place. Utopic, primitive and futuristic, this structure host at democratic prices collectivities and individuals in project.

The formula « résident-performer » combines :

  • Hosting in the Camping Town in your private tree-house ;
  • Free participation to the creative and artistic life of the camping town and/or possibility to develop your own personnal project in a collective and stimulating frame ;
  • Shared acces to the studio (3X4h a week).

This option fits students, artists, people in mobility and whoever what to experiment an alternative and original way of living. The “Calender of creation” of the Camping Town is not a traditional training, but a way of living in an artistic and collective environnement. It alternates Workshops-Performance (once a month), open-working spaces in studio (3 times a week) and showings (on demand) and is compatible with an other professional project or studies in Brussels.
